katie's dresser is a hand me down from her great grandma...i love furniture with a story. but the brown was outdated and i wanted it more shabby chic like her room will be...
i decided that the day was today to do it! and as i was getting ready to stain it i saw that i bought wrong stain, and it was SUPER dark...but because i live in the middle of nowhere and most likely the hardware store here in town would not have the right one i was looking for anyways, and i would of had to wait till the next time i was willing to drive out to walmart only to find that it wasn't there either...i decided to take my mistake and go with it, so the stain is a little darker than what i usually use...but i think it turned out okay? now i need to find handles for it...cause the ones that i found are not the right size! any ideas? i'm going to knobhill's online store to see what i can do, but all in all i think it will turn out super cute as it gets closer to being finished...and now of course it makes her walls need paint even more...

Way cute! So when I think stain I don't think white. What is the process? I have my dressers from when I was a child that I'd love to transform from their dark wood to something a little different.
i love the darker stain!!!! don't tell that it wasn't what you intended, unless you are unhappy with it, and if you are you can send it up my way- my address is....
i need to repaint my dresser, but i'm not sure what color i want. i have a log pine bed that my husband has deamed 'off limits', so i have to work around it. any suggestions???
i painted it white, then i distressed it by sanding it and the stain is a polyurithain (sp?) does that help on clearing up the stain question?
as for the log pine bed...you could go with a puke green for the dresser (ralph lauren kaki is my next paint to use and for my bedroom)...or a cabin red (eddie baur (ugh my sp)both distressed...maybe?
Hello delurking here-- I love the way it turned out! I have a dresser that is the ugliest yellow on the face of the planet. It needs some attention and your doing your daughters dresser is making me want to pull my dresser out of it's yellow coma!

Okay one more question...is the polyuritain tinted then or did you add tint to it? Can I ask what your favorite color is that you normally buy? It turned out awesome and Im totally going to paint my little china hutch this weekend because that dresser has such new life and its made me so excited I cant wait any longer!

i got really pretty glass drawer pulls from house of antique hardware.com. they were really reasonably priced and they have great stuff. also i got the wrong knobs the first time and they were really good about switching them for me.
I love it, Vanessa! You'll have to motivate me when it's time to do my hutch. Walls seem easier than furniture to me.
What color of stain do you usually use? I used Early American on the beadboard in my kitchen, and Walnut in my boys' room. Haven't picked a favorite yet. My brother works at a cabinet shop where they make distressed cabinets, and I think they usually use a walnut stain.
okay the one i used (by mistake) was antique walnut...the one i usually use is just walnut or colonial walnut...i guess antique walnuts are super dark...who knew?
you can buy lots of different hues everything from "clear" (great for black things) to cherry to walnut and so forth, happy staining!
That is adorable. I don't think the stain is too dark at all. I had to enlarge it to even see the stain.

wait! SO, why use clear on black? I need to know cause I spray painted a table black, it looks good, but maybe there is more that I should do to it.
the only reason i would use a clear stain on the black is if the paint was "flat" which is better (just my opinion) for sanding away. and the clear one just seals it better and is easier to wipe clean also.
