so i've mentioned before that we live at the altitude of 7000+ feet.gardening (and cooking) follow a whole different set of rules here from where the husband and i grew up... near ocean level.
because our growing time is shorter than most other places (it's been snowing the past few days..and we've been known to get snow in june even!) a few of the people around here (the serious gardeners) have some kind of outside green house. that's not in our budget at the moment, so i started researching indoor gardens.
this is intriguing but i am just wanting to make my growing season longer so that's why i started things early this time around.
last year we experimented just to see if we could even grow a garden.
we started late. but we still had quite the garden of zucchinis and peas.
this year i wanted more of what i knew my family would eat and eat and eat and eat.
MORE FRUIT and some vegies.
i love strawberries and so do my kids. if we had endless amounts of strawberries for each individual mentioned...we would all eat as many as we could and we wouldn't care about the runs we would all get because of it.that.is.love.
of a fruit.
and we have it.
the husband likes them but not enough to give himself self induced runs.
we've already noticed a few growing. and it is not uncommon to hear in the midst of the chaos i like to call my home...somebody yelling out "i call that strawberry! that one's mine!!!" to which another one will be like "NO! that one's MINE!!! i called it like yesterday."good times.
we also went to walmart and bought 2 of these little starter green houses. each cost us $5 each.
each comes with 72 individual pockets of soil for each little plant to grow.
we have cantaloupe, carrots, lettuce, watermelon, tomatoes, pumpkins, and peas.
no zucchini this year. because people door bell ditch it here in town. just kidding but you can't go to the post office without someone asking if you want peaches or zucchinis.
the kids are more excited then i expected. the boys think its cool that we are growing little chia pets...katie can't stop talking about the strawberries. i mean hello...that's what strawberry shortcake grows and one thing is for sure the girl loves strawberry shortcake.we'll have a long(er) growing season this year. thanks to starting early this year. i really hope and cross my fingers that this will work out but in the mean time
we'll just have to keep waiting.

Hahaha...your little girl with the dual finger nose picking is just priceless! Too funny! I think growing your own garden is the best way to go! I think it's great you have your family involved in it too! Have fun! :)

Beautiful photos and good luck this year! I manage to kill every plant that comes across my path, so I am sticking to tomatoes again this year. Oh, and I see your daughter is a multi-tasker just like my boy. Children are lovely. LOL
I wonder if it is too late to do the starts now? It would be a fun little family night for Asher(2 1/2) and Abbie(1), Plus, if we keep getting this wretched snow, nothing is going to grow outside:( (Our daffodils are about to die from the wind/ snowstorm Monday night)
I can imagine the challenges of gardening at an elevation of 7000 feet. Looks like you have a good start for the year.
Way to get started!! We are doing a combined garden with our friends up the road, so on Monday's nights this summer you will see all 11 of us weeding! :)
We just planted 50+ strawberry plants and about 40+ Raspberry starts here at our house. We are excited about all the fruit we will have this summer. That is if they can survive all this snow we keep getting off and on!
no, really, people DO doorstep ditch zucchini, and tomatoes, around here. Maybe it's a rural UT thing? they also bring grocery sacks to church and leave them in the foyer.
Your garden is really off to a great start! I am also gardening in a little different climate than I am use to this year though I am only at 2000 feet. I am learning all about dealing with deer, rabbits, and gophers. I have used those Jiffy starter packs for years and love them. You can check out my gardening blog at growingthymes.blogspot.com

v...you can't let those little strawberries grow before your plants are a little more mature. you have to let all the energy of the plant go into getting the plant big and healthy before you let it grow fruit.

Obviously you replant these outside right? Have you ever tried leaving them inside? I don't have the space in my yard currently for a garden, but have been trying to find a way to start one. Any suggestions?
yeah actually there's a lot of websites dedicated to inside gardening. if you click on the link i made you can go to one of them but if you google it you can find a ton of websites dedicated to inside gardens! it's quite interesting!!!!

What a great little garden you have going there and so fun to have your children involved. Our garden is coming along too and just bought some sweet basil today. My truck smelled so yummy coming home from Lowes! :o) Like you I live in the middle of no where so that was a drive!

I live at 7000ft and gardening is always a struggle. I'm big into herbs (basil, cilantro, parsley, oregano, chives) and they grow pretty well (I have issues with basil-they love heat, but am going to try starting them from seed this year inside). But my parsley, oregano, thyme and chives come back every year-outside! Can't believe it, but once the snow was gone it was green underneath already so if you like to cook with fresh herbs all summer, try them. My lettuce did great outside in a huge pot but the MANY deer we have here completely ate it all. I'm moving it to my second floor deck this year. But I can't wait to hear about your bounty! Ellen

We started seeds last year and my Sweet Girl loved watching them grow. This year due to moving, we haven't started any seeds inside so we'll be buying plants.

I bought the same tray. We started our seedlings last week. I put it in the screen porch because we have had such great weather. I'm sure that it will not last so they will be indoors soon. I didn't do strawberries.

Hey! I love that dual nose picking picture. But just wanted to let you know that this year, although we live in Texas, I got some of those $1 little pots from Target and they're actually growing! Yeah, I'm THAT excited about an itty bitty plant growing in my kitchen.
I was recently going through my fabric and realized I kept saying, "for all the things good in this world, I can't figure out why I bought this hideous piece of fabric." There were several of them.
However, I am so dang cheap that I can't get myself to throw them away. Some of them were given to my son to cut up and play with, a couple were actually snuck into the trash--almost as though if I did it sneaky enough than I wouldn't notice--and than there was a pile left. Isn't that sad. Why did I even buy these? Dang, sometimes I hate the clearance section.
Anyway... I started thinking about what I could make with this abominable mismatch of fabrics and transform them into something I love. The thought came to me...V's rag rug!
I'll send you a picture when I am done.
Oh, what fun. Veggies and fruits are the best! Love you little indoor garden starters. I know about the short growning season as my daughter and husband live in the Sierras.

Oh my gosh, I just died laughing at the dual-finger-nose-picking! My 1 1/2 year old has taken to doing that lately (either that, or she'll stick her finger up one side and purposely blow snot bubbles out of the other...its truly amazing...and disgusting). Rock on with the garden! We have our little seedlings growing on a table in our dining room right now...last year the last snow was in JUNE!
I used those little greenhouse pot things last year and if you want a bit of advice from my experience, when you plant your seedlings outside, try to peel off the "netting pots" and just stick the plant and potting soil in the garden, the ones I was able to do that with did much better than the ones I left the netting on, it never did dissolve on most of them. Good luck with it!!!
