while the husband had some time off last week. we had the idea to finish up a few more things on our list of things we needed to get done in and out of the house.
granted our list is monstrous but we are doing one thing at a time as time and funds permit.
for example this is the master bedroom closets (and all the other closets as well) when we were looking at the house. notice the pinkish glow...well that's because the opposite wall is sponged tomato orange-red...i'm saving to show you that for another day...you can only handle so much of this house at one time. (trust me)
husband changed out all our closet doors in the house to these nice bi-fold doors. it really helps with the house not looking so 1970's.
i did when i saw it.
i was like "holy moses! who in their right mind does this kind of stuff?"
and then i cried.
i like color but come on.
i like color but come on.
all i've got to say is that those must of been some good drugs.
so before we moved in we painted it...white.
and while my in laws were in town, my father in law helped my husband put up all new doors in our house.
the last and final thing we worked on this last week was finishing up the covering up of the smurf blue we had going on the outside of our house. before the husband went over seas we did some of it but didn't get to finish it all. the goal this summer was that we weren't going to have any more blue...
edited: i should note that when we were looking at the house this was one of our only options, there were no other houses for sale and well that's why i kept crying everytime i would turn a corner. i don't think we would of bought this house if there were other options...but we're glad we did. the view is amazing and it's a really nice house. not my dream house, but a really nice house and it serves it purpose...keeps us warm at night and gives us a place to call home.
***************
last week we also enjoyed:
*BBQ-ing with great friends and neighbors
*playing board games and making a puzzle (star wars of course) by the end of it, it was just the husband and i up till midnight with bloodshot eyes putting the blasted thing together.
it was a nice way to end the summer.

Beautiful redos! The front of the house looks amazing! I love the new closet doors, amazing!
wow what you've done looks great!! yeah i did jump in my seat a bit when I saw the blue hallway haha, white is definately much better. You have done an awesome job!!
Wowee zowee. When I saw the blue walls I said, "Oh. My. Word."
All I can say is: you've got guts. I love people with vision and it certainly has paid off. Everything looks awesome.
You've done good, girl, you've done good.
The house looks 2,00% different.
Also, I think you're fun and funny. I like reading your blog.
Wow! what a beautiful transformation you guys made with the house! Nice job! I did scream or at least squealed when I saw the blue walls! Wow..............!
Great job! :)
Someone liked blue, didn't they. Looks WAY good! LOVE the shutters too! The doors look fabulous!
Oh good grief that blue all over is frightening!!! I love the fresh, clean look of the white walls! We might need to do that in our bedroom because it looks pretty dingy.
Oh my gosh, looks great! Kudos to you and your husband for not getting scared by all that blue!
Can you come to Australia and help me with my house??? Pleeease????? It is amazing to see the before/after, WOW what a great job.
what a difference a coat of paint makes!
Gorgeous transformation.
How many coats did it take to cover that blue?!!
WOW - what a transformation! You have a good insight into what things "can be"!!!
I know what you mean. I have a house kinda in the same perdicament. It's an older house and needs a face lift still.. the outside anyway. I love the doors and the floor in the hallway. You guys did a great job revamping the house. And you have green grass now! Looks great.
OMG! What a great redo. You have changed the whole thing. I don't know if I would have seen what potential was there. Keep up the good work!!
WOW V. It looks like a completely different house! Wonderful job!!
Yep... paint, when done well is our friend.
Snappy Di
(outside of your house is such a great makeover... hope you are patting yourselves on the back)
Your home looks beautiful.
Renee @ Cottage Lifestyle
Wow, a little white paint makes a big difference doesn't it? I like color too but...wow, yes I did scream out loud at the blue hall. I applaud your progress, the places you have worked on look really great:>)
I never fail to get a good laugh out of reading your posts....The house looks wonderful and the husband and you should be proud. That is a lot of work accomplished!! The outside shot is incredible, i would never guess it was the same house!
*sigh* I love your house....
that blue should be banned from the paint store. Love the after of the outside of the house
wow they really liked blue--a NASTY blue at that!!
OOOOH! It looks beautiful now!
Good job!
absolutely perfect. Such a cozy place to live...love it!
Thank you for making me smile! Your story (blue! what a fantastic colour! Ahem.) reminded me of my first year of marriage .
We were a young couple and we just bought our first house.
It as cheap.
Because all the corridors and the kitchen walls were painted in bright orange...
Some good drugs indeed!
What a transformation on the house (I now think we need shutters, my husband thanks you I'm sure). The green grass helps a lot too :)
WOW, I like blue but holy crap! lol.
Looks much better white.
We have a ton of things to do around here, too. Our house was built in 1962 and it shows. The kitchen could easily be on one of those worst-room-in-the-country shows. HORRIBLE cabinets... all dinged up and stained and dirty, black handles that look like spades on the end, attached at an angle, teal linoleum floor...
The bathroom has brownish-orangish-pinkish trim tile. It's bad. Oh and the cheap, hollow doors that the paneling peels off of. But we are SLOWLY getting there.
Beautiful - just beautiful! The exterior doesn't even look like the same house - but a lovely home where love abides :) Great job!
AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH! Good drugs is right! Or something.......Yikes! The redo's are AWESOME!
Fantastic redo's, all of them! I love the difference the new doors make, would never have guessed. I love your phrase, "smurf blue". Could not have described it better myself!! Your eyes must be so relieved.
Wow. Isn't it amazing what paint can do? The outside of your house got a major facelift with the change! It looks so cozy now. Like a "come on inside" type of look. Great job!
You've done some fantastic things! I'm always in awe of those who can look at a house and jump in and make it look so new and clean! Can't wait to see more!
I love the changes you've made! That sure was a bold blue you inherited!
I think there must be some kind of awsome award for your recreation. Words just don't offer enough!
Those blue hallways! Yikes!
Love the before and afters!
It's so funny because I've always imagined you living in an old farm house in the middle of nowhere- I never pictured you in a ranch house. I love to see the things you do with your house!
Thanks for sharing so much of your life and creativity with us...
Wow! Amazing transformation in the hallway (and everywhere else!) It's crazy how much difference a coat (or four) of paint can make!
I did not scream but I grinned and made round eyes.
White is much better!
The last resident had really strange color taste..Blue, inside and out?
Again, much better pale...
Your house feels way more warm with that nice landscape!
The new bi-fold doors are great! That gives me an idea for my house....hmmmm!
Oh my...the blue! I like the color too but that was just too much. It looks very nice and I love the doors.
Paint is a wonderful thing!!! Bold color belongs as accents not as wall color:) Love your white transformations all over your home!!
Terrific improvements... all very effective. Congratulations on having/making a beautiful home.
Haha, Holy Moses is right! Those folks who painted those colors must have been crazy. You already have it looking tons better! :)
See, you picked the right house after all! It just goes to show that it's the layout of the house that matters, the cosmetics can always be changed. I love the porch, that is rare to find in a ranch. I think you should turn yourself in to BH&G, they're always having before and after contests!
Did you guys put in the wood floors, or were they hiding under that nasty old carpet? And seriously, do you know who lived there before, because I honestly can't believe anyone could actually think- wow, that blue is so pretty! Unless they were on crack.
Elisabeth
Awesome. The doors look great. Want to fly out here and help us do our lame-o doors! I know just what you dreamed of doing. Everything looks fabulous.
Wow! You have a wonderful gift of seeing the potential. I've noticed that in all your spray painting projects but your house redo seals it. I wish I had that gift! I would have seen the walls, closets, and outside of the house and said, "No thank you!" I am completely amazed!
OH MY! That blue is...BLUE! We had the same issues with our house when we bought it, including a crazy faux paint that includes not 1, not 2 or ever 3, but FOUR ugly colors all mixed together. It's amazing what some paint can do. Your house looks so cute! Great job!
Love it!!
What a transformation! I love what you guys have done with your house...very simple and elegant. And yes, I did jump a bit when I saw that color blue!
What in the world? Why would . . . ? Well, I must say I’m glad that the blue didn’t scare you off like it would some buyers. It looks great!
White just really freshens a space. Love the "after" look of the hall and the new doors.
Lucky for you I had just swallowed my cereal as I read..."all i can say is they must of been some good drugs." You crack me up. I almost had ceral all over my screen.
The front of the house is just a phenomenal after. You and your hubby really turned it around. I am sure the neighbors love it too. No more smurf house in the neighborhood anymore.
oh my gosh!!!! I just had to pull myself off the floor from the blue assault.
I love blue, but now, I understand that there can be such a thing as too much of a good thing! I noticed the sky looks REALLY blue in the pic where the house is blue too!
You guys have done an amazing job! It's crazy how a little thing like color and new doors can make such a HUGE difference.
All I can say is WOW! I love all the changes. I was just sad to see the blue hallway walls go, they were beautiful...just kidding. Great job. Have a wonderful Monday!
♥Ana
Amazing!! Amazing what just changing closet doors can do. REALLY amazing what some white paint can do on the inside and outside of the house (seriously those people before must have been obsessed with bright dark blue. Weird.) And love the new doors on the bedrooms too. What a HUGE transformation. The outside justlooks amazing. I love the shutters added too. Way to go on a huge transformation.
The afters look beautiful. Wow you are so amazing.
Wow! The outside looks like a totally different house. It looks so much brighter and inviting.
"Amazing" I am sure you added a lot to the value of your home also.
Wow -- those blue walls?! And .. they weren't even painted WELL. At least you have vision. :)
WoW! It looks great!! We have been doing little by little to fix up our house too. Over the last 2 weeks we changed 6 light fixtures, including a small chandelier, an over the bathroom mirror one, and added an ikea one to a kids room. Fun times! I love the wall down the hall and how light it looks. I need to get my husband to open up to putting plates on the wall! :)
Oh V, I had no idea it was THAT bad. Holy smokes. Once again, you are amazing.
Oh my gosh ~ the blue was giving me the shakes ;) What a wonderful job you all have done. It looks amazing!
Can't wait to see more!
Sharon
What a transformation -- it looks great!
Your neighbors must absolutely love you and the improvement you have made to the neighborhood.
I didn't scream, but did sit there with my mouth open in aghastment (is that a word?).
Y'all have done some wonderful things. Your hall looks awesome and I love the closet doors.
Love the peeks into your home.
Your house looks absolutely beautiful! I did a double-take on those blue walls...maybe the previous owners were colorblind?? Anyway, I've been lurking on your blog for awhile and just wanted to let you know that I love it!
V--you and your sweetie are just amazing, and the support staff of in-laws, etc.! Can't forget them! I love the way the white freshens everything up! I painted a couple of fun things around my yard, etc...check out my blog and let me know what you think! Have an awesome week! And, oh, by the way, on my calendar, I still have 2 weeks of summer left and I plan to enjoy it!
Blue -- BE GONE! It's a beautiful home!
Holy Moly! That is impressive!
I'm way surprised at how much difference the doors make, besides the paint and other touches. You have done a terrific job!
I noticed the framed photos in your hall, and I have to tell you that they look awesome. You have the touch!
Isn't this fun?! I feel so vicariously accomplished!
Oh myyyyyyy!!!! My mouth literally dropped when I saw that blue hallway. What WERE they thinking??!! It looks great now painted white!
And the exterior looks fabulous!
WOW! What an amazing difference -- GREAT JOB!!!
i love the afters. you are a brave, brave woman.
you have done a great job.
I love your house! I love the front porch..I don't have a front porch and have always wanted a nice one. You guys did awesome!
WOW!!! Those were some blue walls... lol.
I love how you've transformed everything. The front looks totally amazing and so does what we've seen of the inside so far.
WTG!!
WOLFIE
holy smurfette!!!
what the hell were the previous owners thinking???
obviously they were higher than a kite when they had that brainiac idea.
geez o' pete.
on a much lighter note...
it's looking amazing chicka.
were these the doors jake & his dad were putting up when i was detaining you on the phone???
tehehehe.
The changes you have made are very tasteful. Huge difference, fabulous job.
Wowzers...that was some shade of blue! How did they not have a headache every time they walked down the hall?!?
Everything looks fantastic - you have a great eye!! :)
~Keri
My jaw dropped open at the last photo. For real.
glad you had a good close to the Summer! I'm totally amazed at what you've done with the blue house. You have made it a home.
You know what I missed this summer? Chatting on the stoop while the kiddos wizzed around us on bikes. I miss you. :)
WOW, that blue hallway is AWESOME. I think that's what people called "wall treatments" in the 90s. It was probably amazingly "decorator". Your remodels looks fantastic!
You and your husband must have great vision...(or imagination!) to see beyond the "blue"! What a wonderful transformation! You must laugh whe ppl on House Hunters shows say they "don't like the color...". I love the closets and your little hall montage,too..take a pic face on so we can see!
~Nancy
WOW, for the love of BLUE..lol If one did not take drugs, one might start...as always, your turn around vision is lovely! A very nice home for a happy family and good times to be had!!!
Your house looks beautiful! I am so impressed!
Love the before/afters.
So, let me just say... you crack me up! I love to laugh. I mean I LOVE to laugh. There are those days as I am checking blogs that I just want to get through them, or skip some altogether (lets face it, with a 5 and 3 year old and 4 month old twins I have a lot of THOSE DAYS!). But whenever I notice a new one from V and Co. and get excited. I LOVE how you repurpose used things! Not only do you keep me rolling with laughter, but I get inspired also. Like, all the time! So anyway, today is one of those days that the babes want to nurse CONSTANTLY so I (kicked) encouraged my older kids to PLAY OUTSIDE DANGIT! As I started checking blogs it was like serenity for once today when I saw you had posted. So, with my constantly hungry babes I have been planted infront of my computer for a good part of the day going back through your old posts. I know, it sounds a little weird and probably a bit creepy. But it is what has made this day bearable.
I feel like I can relate, at least in part, to you. One entry in particular (and this will tell you how far back I was in your blog-I swear I am not psycho) was your shopping experience with your kids. One getting stuck, the other climbing out, and the hilarious one thinking that being a goofy cluts is going to make everything okay. Seriously, I was laughing so hard I had tears.
It's good to find someone like me out there.
Keep up the wonderful posts!
The After photos are amazing! What a difference a lick of white paint does!! And may I say, its HUUUUUUGGE! Or perhaps that's just standard in the US! On a humourous note, it looks like you painted the lawn as well!!
Wow! It looks great! I really like your frame gallery in the hallway.
Wow, what a transformation!! Amazing what a little paint can do!!
I kept scrolling back and forth between the last two photos, seems things get lost in the first one. I guess the blue is so shocking that I didn't notice the green roof or walkway.
Looks great!!
Elise
Oh my, you are one brave woman. Only option or not, it would have been difficult to commit to that house. The view however is breathtaking.
the pic of the hallway gave me a jolt...and then the exterior before picture had me wondering if that was the same blue paint???...b/c the hallway was enough...the befores gave me a good laugh...the place looks absolutely amazing in all your afters!!
Wow. Wow. Wow. It all looks so amazing. I really love the outside transformation. You should frame those side by side to show yourself just how far you've come! Great job!
What a difference! Looks awesome. Thanks for sharing and inspiring me.
Wow those walls were BLUE! Your style and taste is definitely shining through, and it's looking wonderful - very classy. Way to have the vision to make it to the end.
I'm glad the Shaw's could help convince you to buy the scary blue snake house and live in the middle of nowhere with us ...it wouldn't be the same without you.
sorry that was me not aaron
I gasped out loud when I saw the blue hallway.
One of my favorite blog entries ever! You have transformed that mangled up house to a perfect Martha Stewart, Good Housekeeping, picture perfect home. I think the walls must be smiling under all that fresh paint. Thanks for saving that corner of your town!
um wow. the previous owners loved themself some blue didn't they? lol
i love how you've hung the start outside the house; the perfect touch!
The front of your house looks amazing!
The hallway looks great. I love the dimension the collection of different frames gives the photo wall.
Well, I am flabergasted and amazed at the work you have accomplished in your house!!!! Beautiful job!
Debra
you'd never guess that was the same house. Did the smurf's live there?
Hello, you don't know me, but I love what you do. I'm in the same situation with fixing up my old home. I noticed the green carpet on the front porch and was wondering how you were able to remove all the glue. Mine has had glue on it for probably 40-50 years and I was wondering what great product you found to remove it.Thanks for all your help, keep up the good work.
LOL... that was the same reaction I gave my husband when he painted his studio what I call "toddler" blue. It is so bright and electric a blue that it hurts the eyes. He loves it, though. Go figure.
You did a great job renovating. It seems like a warm and welcoming home now.
wow that blue hall was simply amazing. your house is looking good now. love it. thanks for sharing.
It looks so good now--at least it had good bones. Our house has rickety ones that don't like change. I want to replace all our doors, too, and I just don't think it will happen. Can we borrow you father-in-law? ;)
Now bring on the sponged tomato wall.
I don't know WHAT you are talking about, I say MORE blue paint!! ha ha.... you are a miracle worker, that is for sure. The house looks amazing!
Looks like a "dream" house to me. You dreamed a vision and made it happen. I LOVE your house! I have been trying to be more colorful with my walls, but I think I just really like white----so light and alive.
The after pics just make me want to say "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH....." with a nice peaceful sigh.
I'm a firm believer in white everything - so crisp and clean and so easy to add color in accessories. I also love 6 panel doors they're classic - never have to worry about dating the decor.
You did a beautiful job and should be very proud and pleased!
WHat an awesome redo! Your house is beautiful! Thank you so much for joining in on the party! Jen
I love before and after posts- You did a beautiful job- I love how much covering up the blue and adding nice shutters made such a huge difference.
Your redos are gorgeous. Now, did you do that with spray paint? :)
Wow, what a humongous difference! Congratulations!! Job well done!
I'm glad I wasn't standing up when I saw that blue. Whoa.
Looking great! Definitely love the white better than the smurftastic blue...
I've beem there. I am loving what you have done with the house. My favorite is the yard...I have a thing for big green yards. I am way jelous. Our front yard is sad and small. Just imagine the cart wheels that could be done on your grass?
I love that color blue but even I couldn't take THAT much of it. WOW!!! They must have been GREAT drugs! It looks great now! Congrats on the accomplishments and hard work.
Wow! It looks wonderful; I love white!
And who in their right mind would paint a hallway COLBALT BLUE?!?!?
I'm dying right now - from laughter that is. Seriously, whomever lived in your house, must have also lived in mine. Our basement & master bedroom had similar (eeerily similar) paint jobs. Glad to see yours is all better. We are currently working on ours :) (For a really good laugh, see our crazy Armageddon room here ... http://ryanandcynthia.blogspot.com/2009/07/our-house-is-very-very-old-house.html) Once we are done, I'll have to do a "before & after" post. Thanks for sharing - it was very encouraging :) Cynthia
W-O-W!!!!! Seriously Smurftastic, I love what you've done with the place. I'm a huge fan of makeovers and love what a good coat of KILZ primer and fresh paint can do : )
Wonderful transformations. You've done some amazing work. I'm looking forward to that very thing with our home we're moving to in Texas (in one week. yikes). I love finding blogs with home renovations b/c it gives me great ideas!
WOW, what a transformation on the outside of the house!! I love the "after"! The inside is very beautiful, too, and I can't wait to see more :)
HA! My daughter's room is just.like.that blue~only it's pink! Guess we're tacky, huh? (((((HUGS))))) sandi
I just noticed, I have the same picture that you have over your nightstand, I painted the frame black and its in my kitchen taking up wall space for now awaiting a new home for it in my house.
Just had to share that. LOL.
I love all your transformations, we moved to our current country/house three yrs ago and i have only just found work this summer and hubbie has been ill and unable to work for a year but I am inspired by your photos so when budget allows I will be tackling this beast of a house to turn into a home ;) ( before moving in I did insist that the pink/purple bath and wash basin be removed, but the toilet still lingers)
