the community council and i have been sewing this quilt. all the fabric was donated and we made it in like two nights. then we had a fabulous friend (hi f!) quilt it for us and then another wonderful friend (hi lori!) and i sat and watched "sweet home alabama" and bound it. all in a matter of days.we made it because it's our on going effort to raise money for the school's new playground. like i mentioned before, our elementary school doesn't have play ground equipment that is up to code for school standards, most of it has been there long enough for 60 and 70 year olds to remember playing on it.
we know it's going to take years to get enough money this way but every little bit counts and we will continue our efforts in raising the funds to get those kids some new stuff.
the community has been so great and many business's have offered free services and home made items (one being this quilt made by us, and the other a crochet rug).
it's times like these that makes me so proud to be part of this close knit area.
mighty darn proud.
we as moms to some of the kids that go to this school love this school and want to do anything we can to help it.
we're all working really hard to find and apply to as many grant programs we can to see if one of them will pick us to help us with the funds.
we shall see how this all plays out in time.
we shall see.
i've also been celebrating my 12 year anniversary. this last weekend the husband gave the me the BEST present ever, he gave me a full saturday of hard core cleaning of the whole house (lets just say tooth brushes were involved and baseboards, under the beds, and the freezers were not overlooked). we as a family worked on getting rid of skid marks in the toilets, dusting the cobwebs, and vacuuming dust bunnies.i had one full day on sunday (our actual anniversary) of a completely clean and organized house. well, minus one closet...which just so happens to be my closet. and one that i call my "monica closet" i clean it out once a year. and right now is not that time of the year.
we also bought and we watched
lastly, i got to organize my own little personal creating space. and even though the fabric's not all lined up pretty and "gap-ish" (yeah, i worked there for the holiday season one year in high school, just for the discount...didn't make one dime and i still associate the "santa baby", and "this christmas" (by wham) songs with gap every time i hear them. good.times.) it is much better than what it was a week ago.
when this spot is organized all is well in my world. :)

I just remembered that Target and Macy's credit cards allow you to designate a school for a portion of your purchases to go to. Maybe you could find out if other companies do that, and then ask your readers to designate your school if they don't have a school to donate to. All those pennies add up!

My husband and I clean the entire house sometimes and the only closet that remains untouched is mine too lol He's not allowed in there or he'll start asking me how many clothes I need...

I love the quilt! So, are you auctioning it off? You should try auctioning it on your blog, you've got so many readers! I would think you guys would qualify for some type of govt/grant $. A couple of years ago our school raised $100,000 for a whole new state of the art playground. Here it's not so hard because everyone has tons of money (except us :)
Anyhoo, they got these saucer swings and the first time I looked at them I thought- those look dangerous. Sure enough, a few months later my kindergartener fell off one, split his head open and ended up with 20 stitches in his head (which incidentally cost us about $1500). So, the moral of the story? Do some good research on your playground equipment you purchase! Sometimes simple and basic is better than fancy and newfangled (although I can see your stuff is really outdated)
I'm sure you've looked into this but it is worth mentioning, Lowes I think (maybe Home Depot, too) does grants for physical improvements including playgrounds... Good luck!

I know McDonald's used to give grants for children's parks. I remember it was a very short, easy application and you included a drawing of your plans and then sent pictures afterwards? Good luck raising money!!! Your quilt is beautiful!!

wow! y'all get to have SWINGS?!!! my kids would die from joy if their shcool playground had swings. i guess there are perks too that it is outdated.
The town near where I went to university has the most amazing playground, that was built entirely by the community in just a few days... they had hundreds and hundreds of volunteers and donations (they did a big community drive and got local businesses involved)... it was mostly wood and seriously one of the most amazing playgrounds I have ever seen... obviously there was some type of mastermind behind the whole thing and someone who volunteered to design the whole thing... but it's incredible what can be achieved if people put their minds to it... because loads of people can donate their time/two hands even if they don't have money to donate...

Moms are the best at raising money for anything for their kids. I remember that from when my kids were little. Love the quilt and all the love that went into it. Happy Anniversary to you and hubby. Love you space for creating.

Home Depot or Lowes (I think it was Home Depot) does have some sort of grant fund but can't remember what it allows. Contact them or search on the web for info about that. Another thing to look at is Game Time. They sell playgroud equipment.

There is a WONDERFUL non-profit called KABOOM! that builds play grounds. I helped out in park in our neighborhood and it is awesome. Check them out!

Love your blog, linked via one pretty thing for the table runner. I'm doing that soon. On the playground front you should have your parent group look into grants, lots of companies and government bodies have grants that no one knows about, we applied for some and got our playground sooner. If you have big business nearby try getting a donation from them, it all helps. I'm in Canada so I'm not sure the grants we used would help you, but do investigate. Good luck!
