i should win best mom award for this

so last week at aprox 8:22 pm the night before the 2nd grade play (which my son was to be honey bee #2) i'm not kidding the kid comes up to me and says

second noise maker: "uh mom, i need a honey bee costume...for tomorrow's play."
okay keep in mind we live in a town of 500 people with NOTHING around us. i'm not joking when i say "middle of nowhere". the only thing that might remotely have something that could help me in this predicament would be our "grocery store" that closes every night at 7. yup aprox 1 hour and 22 minutes ago.
me: panic setting in "W-what? what do you mean you need a honey bee costume?"
second noise maker who's about to lose his life:" i'm a honey bee...and i need a costume. for the play. tomorrow."
me: laughing uncontrollably "no, you're kidding. did your dad make you say this?" not laughing anymore.
all eyes are now looking at the man i married who is silently laughing and trying really hard not to say anything. but can't hold back anymore says:
"come on honey you're crafty i'm sure you can whip something up.
by.tomorrow.morning. BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!"
me: glaring "i don't need your help."
me back to the child who i gave birth to who is about to have it taken away by me as well: "uh, why didn't you tell me before now?"
the child:"i don't know? i didn't really know till now."
me: "likely story. go to bed. i'll be over here trying to figure something out."

and so i did. two wire hangers, hot glue, and some tights (which i kind of liked but had to sacrifice) created the wings.

and yeah okay so they look like i made them while smoking crack and drinking...but i wasn't i swear.
a t-shirt turned inside out and some black masking tape was made into his "body".
and you know what's even better? a lot of the teachers at the school read my blog. so they know i sew and am capable of "crafty" things. so this post is for you teachers who were looking at my kid that day and thinking "what in the...i thought she was crafty."

during the whole play all i could think was as i looked at the other honey bees "yup. that kid's parent had more notice than me...so did that one. aaaaaand that one too."

when i saw him afterwards (which he did a smashing good job at being honey bee #2 in-spite of my costume) i also saw his teacher and told her sorry about the costume we only had so and so many resources and blah de blah. you know what she said?
"well, we had extras we told him he could use but he wanted to wear yours."

*tears*
okay you can live a little longer honeybee.

ROFLMAO I don't know why teachers stopped pinning this information to students' shirts. This simple act alone could keep us all from having child services knocking on our doors. My daughter risks her life every time she tells me about a bake sale the morning of. Apparently I have 'Hostess' stamped on my backside.

i can't believe they didn't send something home in folders or something! i would've died! you did a great job coming up with something on the fly.

Erin said...

It wasn't on the fly, it was on the Bee. Sorry... couldn't resist. I love that he wanted to wear yours though!

Can't stop laughing. But only because I have been there myself! I think you did good for last minute but that boy owes you a pair of tights!

Felicia said...

Okay the end of the story is priceless. I had no idea they had extra costumes :o)

Oh, and that's a flattering picture of my kid in the background flipping the bird and scratching himself...

I just came home from my son's 7th grade Medieval Fair. He DID give me notice, but costumes are HARD!!! I was glad I was only a "legendary crafter" in my own mind! Truthfully, though, all of the kids looked great, whether their outfits were simple or elaborate. You son and his friends were ALL so cute!

Tammy and Shelby said...

I too am laughing and to answer pocalinde? He's a boy. I have 2 sons (now 22, 19) and they still don't remember that they need something and they are in college. My 15 yo daughter...man, she tells me everything and with notice.....

You did a great job!

Amy said...

V! Your costume actually sucks! I'm so happy!!!!

Tammy @ she wears flowers said...

Yep, falling off my chair laughing! I am glad it turned out so well, because, really, it is so funny when you tell it!

Angela Yosten said...

LOL!!! CUTE! Oh.. the days when my kids start school... can't wait! BTW... I think your costume was BY FAR the most creative use of materials! LOL!!!

Julie @ Jaybird Quilts said...

i'm glad i waited till the end... oh the things kids will do... remind me to tell you about the horrors i put my mom through the year that my 6th grade class had a "western" theme for the halloween parade... i'm lucky i'm alive!

Marie said...

That was the funniest thing I've read in a long time! It all worked out though, right! Thanks for the laugh! I love the fact that our kids think we're superheroes and can whip up anything they need!

Tasha said...

I think you did much better then I would have and I live where I could have run to at least Walmart. Oh, what kids will do sometimes. I love that he wanted to wear yours though. Kids can dedeem themselves right.

Little boys ( and big , for that matter) have the innate ability to melt their mothers' hearts at the oddest times.

The costume rules, by the way. That's the way they are supposed to look for a school play - not from a Hollywood sewing factory !

I'm so totally impressed with what you came up with! And as one who spends time in Milford, Utah, I do understand the complete lack of resources at your disposal. And I'm certain that I couldn't have done better even tho I live in Salt Lake!

that is hilarious and really sweet!

Oh, you came up with something on practically no notice at all that your son was proud to wear because you made it. That just goes to heart for me.
Great job! I don't know if I would have been able to do it.

my boys are 3 1/2 and already I am afraid of the night I will hear something similar.
I think you did amazing and I love that you are able to share the pain. And give us a smile.

I'll give you a gold star, and a gold medal!!! You're the BEST mom in the WORLD. Seriously.

Love your blog...just started reading it and yup. I think you're fabulous!

(And I totally know about the middle of no.where thing. my parents moved us to a teeny tiny town of 300 when i was 15. *sobbing* and we survived. I'm sure my mom had many moments like the one you just described! LOL! Bless you!!! )

oh so funny! and so precious that he wanted to wear yours. :o)

Joyce said...

Reminds me of the movie "One Fine Day". If you haven't seen it, you must. Moms learn to carry such a "big" bag containing everything that might be needed on any day. Her kid got to daycare and realized it was Super Hero Day, so she reached in her bag and pulled out duct tape, ponchos, etc. etc. and instantly came up with winning costumes for her son and his friend. So, in this case, you are the super hero, and, even though he could have given you more notice, aren't you bursting your buttons that he would rather wear something you made than something someone else made? Good job, super hero, have a great day, and give that little one an extra hug for having such confidence in his mom.

Emily said...

Oh my gosh! That is SOOO funny. And precious to boot. I found myself wondering the whole time I was reading...."why didn't they send notes home?" We have had similar instances with projects etc. and I always wonder why they don't send home notes like they used to.

Michelle said...

I am laughing hysterically right now!!! If you'd have only had that extra 1 hour and 22 minutes... gotta love a boy who loves his Momma though! Very sweet :)

Terri said...

Hehehe - that brings back memories. Nice job on the "fly" (or on the "bee")!

Liz said...

-K- Vanessa, I just choked on my Diet Coke. You make me laugh. I saw the play and thought he looked great.... and did a great job too. I didn't get a whole lot of info out of my little story teller either.

SLO Rober said...

That's the stuff my nightmares are made of! I'd have been so mad, when I handed the kid his wings, I'd have said, "There's your fairy wings!"
(But then I would remember that he was just a child and I should probably not scar him for life just because he forgot some key info given at the appropriate time).
Way to go Mom! I love it!

Mindy said...

Oh, this post made me laugh, and Felicia's comment about her son in the background made me laugh even harder. That is one craptastic costume, and you definitely deserve mother of the year for it.

Vanessa . . . .I am sure that you get a million comments a day . . . but I want you to know you inspire me. Second . . . how do you do it. we recently moved from a good size town to one in the middle of nowhere in eastern montana. Population 400. The closest Walmart is two hours away . . . so a couple of questions if you. How do you do it. How do you stay sane, being isolated? How do you survive on a school paying budget & make it. How do you have time to be crafty. We recently moved to the middle of nowhere . . . changed from industry to now my husband is teaching school . .and i have three boys 5 and under. Any helps, advice you want to give would be greatly appreciated. ANd if you don't have time . . . I understand. Thanks so much. - TIffany

You had me laughing, grimacing and melting all at the same time with this post. You will always come to rescue and any smart boy would choose mama's costume over the teacher's extras. And now you have another sweet, though stressful for a moment there, memory of your little honey bee #2.

zarina said...

awww - that is sooooo good. but hope he won't do that again, or the other noise makers.

Cheryl said...

In typical V fashion you are keeping it real and making us laugh. Luckily for me i wasn't eating while reading your post. How very sweet of your little noisemaker to want to wear one that his mommy made for him. Great job under pressure.

margot said...

I sometimes think the teachers select the plays based on how absurd the costumes are going to be to come up with. I had to make my son a Sequoia tree one year. Really. These days with the schools having ALL of our access information you would think teachers would email that type of information home!

Jeni said...

PLEASE!!!! Will you do a tutorial on a dresden plate. PLEASE!!!

I seem to understand most of your tutorials.
