sneek peek: office slash sewing room

well, it's official.
i have my very own first EVER bonafide sewing slash office slash lets see how much sewing and crafting crap i can cram into a room all to myself.

we signed papers on wednesday and we officially recorded as sellers of our last home and as owners of our new home on friday at 1:34 pm.
all hell broke loose when we got word that this domino effect of selling and buying homes was really going to happen... everyone was approved and well on their way in playing musical homes. i had no idea that when i decided to put our home on the market at the end of august...less than two months later i would be freaking out trying to figure out how we were going to do everything in fast forward motion.
but here we are.

and well, welcome to my own little space in our new home.
i even got new to me but real retro furniture (for FREE) to go it:

a friend was showing me her basement and when she opened a door to one of the bedrooms i nearly fell over in envy when i saw the dresser and desk in this room. i told her i hated her for having such a cool dresser. she stared at me like i was smoking crack. the words "you can have it if you want it" came out of her mouth and i started jumping up and down ecstatic. then she added "you can have that desk too." i immediately stopped jumping and stared at her. i swore i must of heard her wrong. "you don't want them?" disbelieving i kept staring at her. she started laughing and said "are you kidding me? you're helping me by taking it." i continued to jump up and down and up and down. she was re-assured at that point that yes in fact i had to of been on crack due to my response and uber excitement of my new digs for my office.
the desk will be my sewing and computer desk. i will move the screen off the desk while sewing.
the dresser will be where i will keep a lot of my fabric but lets be completely honest, it wont even touch a fraction of what i call my fabric stash. so the closet will we used for organizing fabric as well.
i love it all.

and well i think someone else does too.
but please don't let this optical illusion of a super organized no clutter area fool you...

the other side of the room still looks like this.
and well, lets be honest, so does the rest of the house.
oh heaven help me.

Oh my goodness, I almost fell off my bed when I saw that dresser!!! I have that exact same one that was passed down to me from my mother. She got it in the late 60's. We had the tall dresser, but it eventually actually fell apart. Just last year I re-purposed the dresser and painted it black ( yes, even the laminate top), and streaked it with some red to match some bookcases. It is just like a member of the family. How fun that you get to make a new house your new "HOME".

I am in exactly the same boat. we just moved, plus simultaneously had 5 houseguests. Luckily one was my father in law who is the hardest worker I know. Seriously, I almost cried with relief when he started doing all the worst jobs that were left to do that I thought I was going to have to do. We've been working on our house for 5 months and it's not done yet, but liveable at least. Although I'm cooking on a hotplate (which was kind of a feat with 12 people to feed!)
Anyway, there are boxes and crap everywhere but I am going to have my own sewing room too so can't complain. I can't wait to see how your house all comes together. It will be so much easier to make stuff with a space to do it in!
Did you have to do any painting, etc. on the house first? Take care,
Elisabeth

I was reading your blog as I usually do and my son (8 yo) walks in the den and says "What awesome carpet they have".....and I have to agree. :-)

I would LOVE to have that dresser! Now you've inspired me to be on the lookout. i need a new dresser and one like that is what I want! I should raid my grandparent's house!

Are you going to paint the "new" stuff? Or is it perfect just the way it is?

Melanie@Crafty Cupboard said...

Jealousy is the only thing that comes to mind. But I love my retro dresser, and don't have room for another. So I guess you can bask in the retro goodness and I'll be happy for you :) ha ha! Glad everything went through ok!

Congratulations! I am so happy for you, but I completely understand the living in mess. We are working nonstop trying to get the house under control before the baby comes. It is a pile of never ending boxes. Oh, we are having our fourth boy!

You can't beat free! The fantastic thing is you love it and it's functional for you. I have a sewing sanctuary/son's bedroom but gone for another year, room that I sew in. It's great after 28-1/2 years of marriage to finally have all my sewing stuff in one place, lol! I'm going to miss it when he comes home but it will be worth it to have him back again.

V,
loving your sneeky peeks of your rooms in your new digs. Lucky you to have your own sewing room slash office!
Take your time and take it slow. We moved a couple of months ago across the country and it took about a month and a half to have everything just about where I want it.
Enjoy the process. We will all be here when you have time to ya know, show us your new studio!

Diggin' the "new" furniture. Have you considered hanging your monitor on the wall? Best thing since I don't know what... We hung our daughters' monitors on the wall and it frees up a LOT of their desk space! They LOVE the extra room to do their arts n' crafts and homework.

Yay for you V! It's going to be so great to have your own space.

When our good friends bought their first house there was a wooden armoire - dated 7/8/1829 (my wedding anniversary is 7/8) and the initials W.N. (my grandfather William Newman)- left behind. I, of course didn't know this and neither did they.

But they gave it to us. I love it...painted it apple green. It is my most beloved piece of furniture in my bedroom. Oh, and now they look at it with a bit of envy. Not that that was my intent.

Free furniture rocks!

Pretty jealous of your Eames Era FREE FINDS. Don't tell my mom, she may come steal them right out of your cute little new house.

I've been in the middle of moving recently too and am just catching up on the news! PS I'm totally curious for you to share how much of a profit you made off of your original house after fixing it up so much. Care to share?

That's so great! I love the dresser and your blue vases. Maybe I'll have a room to call my own in our next house. *sigh* Glad you are getting settled in!
