don't ask, don't tell decorating

i go to thrift stores.
nothing new there.
it's not because of the economy or because i'm trying to stick it to the man. and most definitely not because i'm trying to find some antique to sell on ebay. i don't like ebay it stresses me out.
not saying that anyone out there who shops at them is ...i'm just saying i don't.

i like to find treasures.
i like to find things cheap.
i like to create something different from the intended purpose of the original goal.

and because i frequent thrift stores i tend to find some pretty dirty, weird, or ugly things.
but sometimes....sometimes i find the PERFECT thing.
and all you can do is call your significant other with tears of joy, and blubber something along the lines "i can't believe it!!! oh my gosh i could just die happy!!!"
just me? okay well anyways.

sometimes i don't get that emotional about my find. and even though i'm excited about it. i don't feel the need to call the man of the house and gush.
basically sometimes i forget to tell him of some of my finds.

so then we have conversations that go a little like this:
husband: passing by one of my "displays" of decorations(like the one featured above). stopping abruptly turns to me and says "when did we get that?"
me: a few months ago. it's been there the whole time.
husband: where'd you get it?
me: thrift store.
husband: walking away grumbling and mumbling not loud enough for me to hear but i'm sure it goes a little like this "wow, my wife is so awesome. she finds wonderful things where others take their stuff to get rid of it. she saves me oodles and oodles of money by decorating this way. i am so happy to of found my treasure of a wife."

oh yeah and when he rolls his eyes at me i'm sure he's just looking up to the heavens and thanking his lucky stars for me and is trying to think when would be best time to ask if i need a back or foot rub.
yup pretty darn sure.

my justification is basically he needs to ask and then i'll tell him of my finds. but till then we'll keep having that on going scenario.

and speaking of the husband...
i found him doing this in our driveway
when he came in i asked what in the world he was doing riding my bike in a feet of snow...IN CIRCLES?
his explanation: AND I QUOTE "i was trying to create more surface area so that the ice would melt quicker."
me: uh i don't care what your explanation is...how am i going to explain that to the neighbors?
i'm sure people driving by are thinking "oh okay...that makes sense."

then i went to my bedroom and found katie and buck.
my family is weird.

have a great weekend.
next week is all about the tutorials.
i think there's 4 total i'm going to show you.

that's if i keep the crazies all in line.
we'll talk soon.
v and co loves her sponsors go check out what's new at the quilt shoppe

How funny! Tell him car tires are faster, next time jump in the truck!

I thrift shop every time we go out of town. We don't really have much in the way of thrift stores here. So I scout out all the thrift stores in every town we visit! Because you never know what you will find!

;) Can't wait for the tutorials!!!

Too absolutely funny ~ my husband says the same things all the time when I save him money! ;-)

I am sure that is exactly what he was thinking. Love the display!

You are so funny! I didnt know that is what the eyes rolling back meant! (I will definately remember that one!)

My husband could fall overtop of something new in the house and not notice it until two months later, and then I get the drill! He just shakes his head and mumbles some strange words.
Gosh, guys sure miss out on all the fun!
Your hubby on the bike, now that's funny.
Love the dog picture.

So THAT is what my husband is saying. One of his other favorite sayings is, "if you SPENT money, you didn't really SAVE money." Although last week he told me we needed to put something up on the walls of our upstairs bathroom! Weird... Where did MY husband go?...

oops, signed into my husband's account,

Lol, I ♥ these stories about the crazies in your life. :)

Also funny is the fact that I was just about to head out to the thrift stores. :)

I think my hubby says the exact same thing! And I go thrifting the same exact reasons! I love finding a bargain and "repurposing" other people's castoffs.

Hubby and I also play the "guess how much I paid for this game"... He has learned over the years to start ridiculously high - there are times when my training has worked!

LMAO...just because my husband comes up with the same story when he's out in the snow goofing off...oops just fell off the chair laughing..didn't think anyone else did that...

Oh, I can SO relate to the mumblings and eye rolling...but I like your take on it...LOL

Love that your family is "crazy". Mine is too!!! I can so relate!

Be careful. Before you know it your children will be grown and gone, you'll be down-sizing and you will wonder what to do with all the thrift store finds. I wish getting rid of it were as much fun as buying it!

I think Katie and Buck were hiding from the neighbors...just in case they saw "dad" doing the bike thing in the snow...just saying......

Funny husband. Cute doggie and daughter. Wonder what the boys are up to??!!

When my silly, funny and very creative daughter first moved to the California Sierras, she was able to deal with the tons of snow all winter. But, then when Springtime arrived and she still had deep snow in her yard and was ready to start gardening, she put on her thinking cap and thought, "I'll water the snow and it will just melt away." She still lives in the mountains and has learned to be patient about letting the snow melt on its own.

Have a fun and crazy weekend.

Funny! I use the same tactic on my husband too! I hung a HUGE frame with some fabric in it above our couch and he didn't notice for a few weeks. Whatever.

Anna said...

so funny, you're hilarious. I love the play by play conversations. My husband responds the same way to the things I make and do. ;)

I love that pillow in the picture of your your daughter and dog. did you make that?

Ok, I just have to comment on this. Your daughter and your dog...priceless. And the best part? My name is Katie Buck. Lol, maybe you won't find it as funny as me, but I got a kick out of it!

You make me laugh!!

I also practice "don't ask don't tell decorating." It usually takes my husband a few months to notice anything different in our house...we both like it that way.

Glad to know I'm not the only one that lives with a bunch of crazies and practices the art of "don't ask don't tell decorating." : ) The converstations you have with your hubby sound very familiar to those I've had with mine. Ha, ha, lol! Once again, I've gotta say...I LOVE your blog! : )

It was an innocent little post about thrifting and how her hubby thinks she is so fabulous to save him money....and then .....you cracked me up laughing again. LOL V, you never disappoint with a family story. Always keeping it real. LOL, and the last line about keeping the crazies in line made me laugh so hard. Only because I think I can identify with ya.
Looking forward to the upcoming tutorials. have a great week. : )

I'm losing my hearing so those grumbles over my thrift shopping DO sound like a lament of love :)

V have I told you lately how rad I think you are? What do I have to do to convince you to move back to CA so we can eat burritos and lounge on the beach?
Maybe if you tell the hubs that he can ride the bike in circles on the beach instead of a ft of snow, it'll work. Try it and let me know.

Jandi said...

This post made my day! And I love that your husband thought that riding a bike would get rid of the snow faster than a shovel. Sounds like something my husband would do!

Farmgirl Susan said...

LOLOL! I just discovered your blog and already love it. Your sense of humor is wonderful - and that photo of Katie and her dog is priceless.

The bike/snow thing totally sounds like something my hunky farmguy would do (which is one of the reasons I'm constantly grateful that we don't have any neighbors). The good thing is that so many of my vintage and thrifted treasures are still packed in boxes from when I moved in with him (ten years ago), that if he does happen to notice some new thing on display, he usually figures it's something I've had all along - or I can imply that's the case. ; )

I'm so glad I happened upon this post. It's always nice to know there are people out there as bizarre as we are! ; ) Thanks for the laugh. Looking forward to reading more.

It appears all of us who thrift shop must have married the same guy! But not in a "Big Love" way!!

Vanessa, you are such a good writer - soooo funny!

Don't worry - my family is weird too. They too raise their eyes to thank heaven when I show them the latest Ann Taylor sweater that I nabbed for $10 (or less) at one of our local shops.

Haha that cracked me up. I live in NZ and funnily have married the same man as you!!! We even managed to get the same kids! Spooky stuff! :0/

I understand the thrill of the thrift store. We had a yard sale this weekend and then we took everything left up to Goodwill. Once we unloaded all our stuff at the back of the store I asked my husband if I could go inside and shop. He just looked at me, but I was serious!

And, yes, we have a strange family too! That's the best kind! :)

hilarious. I totally wish I could use the economy as an excuse for antique/thrift shopping. My husband so does not understand my quests either. I'm always so excited about my finds -- my husband, not so much. I guess that's why we have blogs, right?

I just love your blog! I found it by chance a few days ago and it's awesome! My husband was also in "awe" of my great thrift store and yard sale finds too. Not really...but who cares? Except when two weeks ago I came home from a yard sale with a pair of Rock and Republic jeans for $1.00!
