small town fair

this last week(end) was the middle of nowhere's fair.

i have to admit one thing this small town knows how to do, is it's fair.

if you are looking for big rides and lights, huge floats and concerts...well keep on moving along cause that's not what we do here.

nope, we have our local shops and business drive up and down the main street throwing candy at you.

that's our parade.

if you're lucky you get a ping pong ball with a # thrown your way...this means extra special goodies at the store where you can redeem your free drink, doughnut, or candy.

my quilt i entered in the fair

it got me 1st place whoot

and my moda bake shop strawberries got me 1st place as well as a purple ribbon for special recognition :)

back side of the quilt
we have a few bounce houses and local vendors selling their home made stuff.

we judge who has the largest zucchini.

and who has the prettiest tomatoes...

ladies put in quilts and kids put in their lego creations.

some of the leather work and wood work that is brought in...WOW.

pictures are taken and judged on the beautiful scenery we have all around us.

we have the rodeo and mutton bustin', but my favorite of them all has to be the DEMOLITION DERBY.

no not my kids but i know the kids and the mom...so if you read this uh thanks for having cute kids in cowboy hats

EDITED PICTURE JUST FOR MAUREEN:
not the best picture but we had to keep our distance just in case.
this is what a demolition derby is:

boys (men) in super beat up cars with spray paint from a can jobs, really loud mufflers, and radiators that can be fixed up lickity split for the next round of crashing into eachother till the last car running and able to move.

oh man the derby.
where men's true colors shine. give a man a car that he can tweek and tell them to crash the competition to be the last one standing and you are going to have some good times.
after the hamburgers and hot dogs and cotton candy is all gone, and the car's have been destroyed and rebuilt with duct tape just to be destroyed one more time...the dust settles and the whole week ends with fireworks.
and you haven't really seen a firework "grand finale" till you've gone to a small town firework grand finale in the middle of nowhere.
let me tell you.

(the giveaway's still going go here for details)

V--I love that your quilt and strawberries won a blue ribbon, but honestly, didn't you know that you had already won a blue ribbon with all of us....(at least ME!) The fair looks fun and I love the way you tell the story--makes me wish I was there to see the fun!

Sounds FUN! I know it's hard to live in the middle of nowhere, but it's kind of worth it, isn't it? So did Felicia quilt that for you or did you do it yourself? I love that quilt, and I was excited that you showed a picture of the back. It's really cool!Did you just piece together random pieces until it was big enough for a backing? I love how that makes it reversible. Congratulations on your ribbons, that is exciting!

Elisabeth

ps I'm about to send 2 quilt tops off to Felicia, I'm so excited about it!

Oh, your quilt is to DIE FOR! I love the old truck you used for the backdrop...where'd you find the truck? I love small towns: they're America at its best and something that hopefully never changes!
XOXO

PS: Cute little cowboys at the fence! I love me some demolition, too!

Your boys look like such cowboys! Love your quilt. I like how the front side is mostly white with pops of color, that's my fave style of quilt. :)

May I ask what is a demolition derby and what are you destroying? Are they real cars or the pinewood derby cars on steriods? I ask because it does sound like such fun, and with 3 boys and a girl, I think they would love to have that around here. Thanks for all the beautiful pics.

Sound like a really good time.. I missed our (my home town) derby days.. the kids race hand built cars with only brakes down a big hill.. and yes we have fireworks and I guess they were great this year. I miss the small town stuff. real sense of being.

Congrats on your two wins! =0)

I am just filling out my State Fair paperwork, I am submitting a granny square afghan this year.

It says Afghans must be blocked, I have no idea what that means LOL

Will you be bringing your quilts up north for the state fair?

I got a blue ribbon for my mini quilt last year, it was kinda fun to have someone (other than family) say you did a great job LOL

My first car was a '59 Rambler( I was 17). Beautiful black beast--I named her Noir. No one in po-dunk Colorado could say or understand that since the only foreign language taught(and rightly so) was Spanish.

She got old(er) and needed too much love, so we sold her. They wanted her for demolition derbys!! I was pissed and sad, but she would have lasted til the end ,so, I suppose she was happy. We have a huge county and a crappy fair, so I count you as lucky--because everyone cares!

What a great time.. I love fairs, and here in Maine we have a lot of agricultural fairs and a lot of fun at all of them. The biggest one is in Bangor,,it's the state fair. I've never been but try to get to one at least every year. Thanks for sharing your local, fun fair!

The first demolition derby I went to was in the middle of nowhere too! Probably next door to your middle of nowhere. It was enthralling, in a morbid curiousity gawking sort of way. :)

Congrats on the quilt!

She sure put the rest of us to shame; so I glad I didn't make it to enter my quilt...can you imagine having it displayed next to that quilt of Vanessa's!!! ***shudder***
BTW, where did you find that truck around here....is it the one I drool over on main street, or have you discovered someone elsewhere...please share!! ;0)
Glad you all had a good time at the "World's Fair"

Our small middle of no where town parade and fair is so much like yours, well, except for the lama? Alpaca?...that I think one of them copied the other! LOL We did have a little girl riding her fair steer in the parade! Oh and a horse drawn hearse! ( This year there wasn't anyone in it...) LOL The candy being thrown "at" you is the best part. Our DIL's family come from outside just for that! (Well, mostly...)LOL Have a good one.

I was totally there - Loa, UT, right?! My husband & I were up from Texas visiting family, so we planned our trip for fair week, just so we wouldn't miss out on the festivities. Love, love, love Loa and it's small-town charm! :) Congrats on your quilt! -April

Do you have the pattern of the quilt you entered into the fair in your shop or soon to be in your shop? I just LOVE IT!

Congrats on your quilt awards.

I have to say I am disappointed that there is no cow chip bingo (or if space is limited, with chickens) or a soaped pig catching contest for the kids. :) That's how we roll in my small hometown. Your post brought me back!
