pleated ruffle and smocking

i've been doing some custom orders as of late.
those kind of stress me out.
see, it's easier to make something up, like it and then present it...
have others like and ta-da! all is good.
then it's another thing to have someone want something, give you material have an idea of what they want or even better say "i trust you" and then let you go to town.
in this picture i was responsible of making up 2 pillow shams (and bind the quilt, and make a decorative pillow that was gathered...not shown.)

what i came up with was the "pleated ruffle" small enough to give it some femininity but not over power it with too much ruffle.
when i saw the quilt i thought that if i did anything that would compete with it, it would turn out to be too much. i try to take into consideration the person i'm making things for. she's "ruffle-y" but not too much. :)
i wonder what i would be...in the ruffle dept?a few of you asked how i got katie's 4th of july dress done so fast...
as much as i would love to take credit for the smocking on katie's dress...i cannot.
but that's good news, cause that means that there is pre-smocked fabric out there (mine was from walmart...remember out in the middle of nowhere that's all i got)
and all i did was while in the store, wrap the fabric around katie and then told the attendant to cut it right where i needed it. came home sewed it up (not needing to measure or cut anything because i did it at the store already!) then i took left over ribbon and sewed them on for straps. super fast and seriously took about 4 minutes.
i'm keeping my eye out for more of that kind of fabric because seriously, sooo cheap and soo cute and sooo okay if it gets raggedly worn out. total for the dress was (including ribbon) $3

in other news...
the garden is a growing
we've had unseasonably cold weather out here
but...
we have little white flowers
and that means yummy pickings
soon.
not bad for two sea level city folk wetting their feet of the country life gardening above 7000 ft.

You're making me wish I went ahead with my veggie garden this year! I've only got 3 tomato plants and they're flowering too... can't wait! And I like the ruffles... nice and understated :)

Love the quilt and the pilow, no surprise there. Whoever gets is is one lucky girl. She'll love it for sure. And if she is crazy and doesn't, feel free to send it this way, because you know all about the shangri-love over here.

things are calming down a bit over here, how are they going over there? we should chat sometime! Soon!

You are to funny! That quilt is so freakin awesome! I love all the colors and patterns in it. Do you sell quilts or mini quilts ever in your etsy? I love them!

Hey I made my baby girl a dress like this a few weeks ago. OKay...maybe i should start posting things i make instead of just observing...trying to get over the hill of putting it out there. However, just wanted to say...using elastic thread for the smocked shirring was realllly easy! It was from Heather Ross' book Weekend Sewing. I think she even did a tutorial on Martha on how to use the elastic thread. Love these little dresses, so easy to get on squirming babies and they stretch for growth!

Hi Vanessa,
Superior Threads has just come out with a product called "Texture Magic" and it has the look of smocking (for your daughters dress), but very easy to do. You might want to check it out on their web site www.superiorthreads.com
Kim Walus did a tutorial using it on MBS for her Patriotic pillow, so you can see how easy it is to use.

The 4th of July dress is SO cute, and I'm glad to here it was Wal-Mart's already done fabric! That means WE can do it! Uhhh, maybe this is a silly question, but did you do the gathering on the fabric on the bottom half of the dress? I have no idea how to gather nicely and am impressed with anyone who knows how to do it.
You did a good job on the quilt and shams! That's some of my favorite fabric.
I bet you can't wait to get your hands on some of the garden goods when they come up!

I love the fabric on the quilt. LOl, as usual. I always love the fabric you use on your projects. The pleeted ruffle on the pillow is just the perfect compliment to the quilt. The color combo is one of my faves these days.

Love the ruffle! You'll want to avoid ironing Katie's dress or you'll feel like a real sucker when the seer's gone!

oh i know what you mean...special orders are the hardest. they are also the most rewarding when someone tells you that you made EXACTLY what they were wanting! which, i'm sure, the lady you made those for will do.;D they look great.

i was so impressed you made that dress all by yourself...you totally should have taken full credit!!

mmmm gardens!! Yours is looking great! I too have some flowers on my peas and I am SO excited!! Do you ever have your peas climb up a fence? Way easier to pick and weed that way!

Your butt is still cute after all these years!

The dress is darling. I know right where to get that fabric. I feel come dresses coming on...

I love the dress. I, too, thought you used the tutorial in the Heather Ross book. I saw her on Martha. She even gave Martha fabric to make her own.

Your garden looks great. I love seeing little flowers on things because that means that even better things are soon to come!

The quilt is pretty, too. I love the ruffle. I, too, think it's different sewing for somone than it is to sell something already made. The hardest part for me is pricing things.

Love the quilt, "butt" love the lettuce, too! :)

SLO Rober said...

Can you please tell me how your lettuce turns out? Ours continues to be very bitter, no matter what kind we grow. Is it the soil, fertilizer? I realize that the other half of your marriage might be responsible for the garden, but... could you ask him for us?

Cute pillow!!! And here I thought you were in the desert like Camille -- that farming picture looks closer to where my family is from a bit farther north. ;-)

I know what you mean about special orders - I'm working on some baby bedding. Talk about a deadline! C-section is scheduled for next week! Luckily I'm just finishing the binding and have a small pillow to stuff.

I like the pleated ruffle. less is more!

you are funny with your captions! And I can't believe you are just getting peas? Where are you? I'm at sea level....

I love the pleated ruffle... I saw something like that in a snooty catalog where the ruffle was satin-ish and then it was pressed flat and then stitched along the outer edge (hopefully I'm not the only person that saves magazine pages)... What you have done is a perfect finish to your project!

LOVE the quilt AND 4th of July dress~wish sewing were a talent I possessed! I can crochet, but I tell you~I do NOT enjoy doing it for profit. Once that deadline gets in there I get weirded out. It's one thing to craft as you are able in the middle of pregnant life with four kids, it's another to hafta push yourself at all costs for a promised product... Not sure I'll do it again any time soon! (((((HUGS)))))) sandi

adorable dress! =0) It is called shirring when you use elastic thread on the outside like that instead of smocking. Don't you just love that you can buy it premade now a days?!! Great job!
