adding white and neutrals

i like color.
you could almost say i'm a "colorful" kind of gal...actually i think someone has even described me as "colorful" in the past.
or was that "interesting"?

whatever the case i like color. and my house used to be all color and no "light". but the trend in my house these days seems to be leaning the other way, of a lot of "light" has been added.
you can see it in my quilts.

my furniture that i paint seems to reflect this as well.
i've even started a new obsession of white and milk glass. especially when found at a second hand store for $1.50 it most definitely becomes an obsession to find more of it.

just recently i changed my main color of my bedding to white. (the quilt in my header sits at the end of my bed so there is a little bit of color there.) katie's room, with as much color that she has...she does have a couple of white painted furniture and white plates.

and while the color is still found in my home, (maybe i'll do a post of all the color in my house next)...i am starting to see some more lights and neutrals.

as for my personality i think it's most defitnitely still heavy on the "colorful" side.

i love white. it makes any little bit of color just *pop*

hubby's grandma used to collect milk glass, i was lucky enough to get a few pieces. can't believe how cheap you can get it at garage sales

Unlike me, almost all my quilts so far have big white (or any solid pastel colors) spaces.

Love all the white, even recognize a few of those finds. :-) I would have to second you on the 'colorful'. Perfect description of you!

White is so crisp and clean...I love it. I do love color, but there's something about white painted furniture, white slipcovers and white linens that just call me. By the way, beautiful milk glass.

I'm really liking white lately too. It just seems to add a calming element to a room but I am also a color girl and I know there will always be lots of color in my settings. It's just nice to have a white or neutral to rest your eye on.

I like all of your color, but I think the white makes it stand out and shows off the color more. I am starting to like quilts with a colored block and white background. I love the old quilts that are white with just one color, usually red or blue so the design really pops. I love the old quilt patterns but with a modern twist, and if I had lots of money, I'd collect antique quilts, but I guess I'll just have to recreate them myself!
I love your 9-patch, did you quilt it yourself? I like the quilting on it, nice and simple. Oh, and with the white furniture, do you find it getting dirty all the time? I just recently painted a cofee table, and some end tables white, and with my kids and their grubby little hands they are always dirty and starting to drive me nuts! I've already used the magic eraser on them a lot. I was planning on doing a lot more white painting, but now I'm starting to think maybe some other colors while I have kids in the house!
Ok, this is turning into a book,

Elisabeth

I think that white and neutrals really make color POP! I am definitely a color gal, but for sure you always need a little (a lot) of color.

My problem is that nothing white ever remains white in my house.
Bring on the colour in that case!!!
Andi :-)

Loving this post. I too am into neutrals and whites. I have been married for twenty years and have always liked country decorating, but now am really leaning more into beach cottage. Lotsa whites and neutrals with a splash of red and blue. I love me some red.
I have always loved milk glass. Hubbies grandmom had lots of it and there is something so simple and elegant about it.
and yes, do a post on color. : )

I'm a neutral loving girl myself, but I did start adding white to my quilts after seeing yours!

I too love this post! I think we might be colorful-sisters. I LOVE color! I think that's why I like white so much too, so that my color can show off! Although being blond and pretty white myself, I don't think I should wear white as often as I do - I kind of disappear. :)

I love white. Our new to us home now that we've redecorated is so warm that I think I need to infuse it with white or ivory or something!
I just don't have hubby on the bandwagon so most of my white is in my daughters room...
At Christmas there is lots of white in my house (and outside it!)

how and where are you displaying your milk glass?
I often see it and love it but don't know what to do with it.

Last year, I painted every thing that I got black. Thanks to you ( and others), I have a lot more white (am painted a pub table now).

White is clean, restful, and pretty. Love it and it really enhances any color you do use with it. And yes, you are a colorful kind of gal! Miss you! Love, B

I'm slowing starting to do the same thing. I love to do a nice neutral color wall and then pop a bunch of color off of it! I also am in LOVE with milk glass. My grandmother collected it, I can't believe you can get those deals, that's amazing!

I need to get more white in my life - I love it - but really like colors as well - it is such a toss up!

These are GORGEOUS photos. Thank you for sharing! Isn't it fun to watch ourselves go through these phases, to celebrate and embrace them? I love the milk glass. If I ever collected anything, it would be milk glass.

Will you come decorate my house next? I have no style of my own. I try, but I just don't. Good thing my husband doesn't care or we would be in a world of hurt.

I love color too...but am finding that white really does make the colors stand out to where I love them even more...and I also have a white pitcher/milk glass addiction!

I love color too! I've been wondering about using white sashing on a quilt... have you ever had the colors bleed? Is there a special way to wash them?
Thanks!

I think your home is beautiful. You are great at placing things just where they need to go to look beautiful.
I thought I saw a link on your blog a while ago about where you made your header on your blog. Maybe it wasn't you but I love your header, where did you do it?

I went thru a "paint everything white" phase and can relate. Garage sale finds, furniture...it might be ugly now but it will GREAT once i paint it WHITE!

There is something so crisp, clean and just plain necessary about white! I think those who appreciate color the most understand white best.

I love your use of color and lights in your quilts and decor. You should do a home tour blog. I'd love to see each room of our house. I'm sure it's chalk full of beautiful colors. Jenn

I love the milk glass piece on the right. Be careful, it's addictive!

Hi V.
I find myself leaning toward the white and light end of the spectrum, as well. I love the milk class dishes. Really beautiful.
For me, I think that the white and light balances out the crazy and wild hooting children.
Let me know if it works for you. The jury's still out for me. ;)

My thoughts exactly.

I LOOOOVE color. But there's something about a crisp white that just balances it out perfectly.

I always admire neutral rooms, but couldn't have one of my own.

I think the white just showcases the colors that much more. I love white. It is so simple and clean and yet bold.

I love white...white cotton...white furniture....white glassware...white towels...white crown molding and trim work. All colors really pop against white! Love it!

oh, it's such a toss up, white vs. color, isn't it? i like a little of each. but white doesn't stay clean very well in my house.

love white as the accent color! All my dishes are white, bedding is neutral, and walls are all a latte neutral color. All of Paige's furniture is an antique white. Anyway... you get the picture ;) Love what you have done with your decor.

White is wonderful. I just got a white quilted coverlet for my bed, and I LOVE it, it just brightens up my room, and any colorful throw pillow I add really stands out. I'm with you, I love white! :)

Hey V - I have the white dotted candlesticks and candy bowl that go with the white bowl in your first picture! Got it from my grandma...LOVE that stuff! I'm afraid to put it out or my kids will knock it over and I'll have to kill them!
