meet the new additions

may i introduce:
sloppy joe and meatloaf.
meatloaf is the black faced one with the "bad attitude" look.

can't wait to have the talk with the kids as to why the cows are gone and we have so much meat in the freezer. but thankfully that won't happen till much later on this year. and i'll leave that up to the husband to explain, except i think it'll be harder on him than on the kids.
he may just become a vegetarian.
serves him right though.
since this was all his idea.
but for now they graze in our pasture and we steer clear of meatloaf because he's unstable and always looking for a fight.
pretty sure it'll be easier to eat him.

i'm still recovering from all the driving and all the laundry that going on two trips in one week will do. so i'm off to fold yet another load and throw another one in the dryer and start up a new one in the washer. only to see that my kids are already in the back yard gearing up to make a mud pit ...summer has officially arrived.

Summer, vacations, and mud! Oh, the memories? I have many cherished memories attached to those three words. (*smiling happily!)

I am a city child myself, but while I was visiting with my paternal grandparents who lived in a village I made friends with a cockerel who went by the name of George. At the end of our stay my grandmother prepared and served a most amazing lunch the highlight of which was "coq-au-vin" - quite a yummy way to make a very close acquaintance with the afore mentioned George ;-).
Everybody tucked in, I was not very keen (I was a very fussy and difficult eater back then, wish I have stayed so lol). In her naivete, my granny tried to encourage me to savour it by reminding me how much I loved our dinner in its previous reincarnation. The result was - you guessed it - tears, tears and more tears.

Good luck to your husband - he'll need to mobilize all his skills and come up with a very good story!

Those names gave me a good giggle.
Thanks.

The country life! My papa had cows that we rose when there were not any horse in the barn, and cows are an experience all on their own! Wait until they get comfy, and you get one big lick from sloppy joe, you'll be in love and meat won't seem to appealing (although i had a big burger last night so i guess love fades!)

Sloppy Joe and Meatloaf?? LOLOLOL I still couldn't eat them though.

So funny! We currently have a "T-bone" in our pasture.

We had "t-bone" when I was growing up. When the butcher came for him my dad had to go in the house. LOVE your blog!

Rachel said...

Oh, don't let my husband see this! he wants goats and alpacas, but I'm sure he'd love a cow or two. The neighbors already have cows. Good luck with that.

Oh how fun, V! They look so much like you and your husband!

Yay for summer! And those cow names are HYSTERICAL!!!

You should never name anything you plan to eat.

When I was a girl about 6 years old we had a steer named "Beaver" after Beaver on Leave it to Beaver. It went to the butcher. One night we were eating supper and I asked my dad if we were eating Beaver. He said yes. I broke out in tears and ran from the room never finishing my supper.

I lived to eat beef again, but I still remember the event even though it was 48 years ago.

We have been dairy farmers for 25 years so holsteins of always in the freezer. Have fun and enjoy the meat.

LOL! My kids all know that we can love the cows, pigs, chickens, or whatever else we get, but they will have to say good bye at some point, and we WILL be eating them!! : ) They learned it young! Good luck with your new additions!

Oh no, don't you know you don't name something you're going to eat? Even Meatloaf and Sloppy Joe (love the names though!) lol I hope you'll share more pictures of your future dinners because they are very cute.

Wow! I'm contemplating chickens for eggs & meat but I just don't think I can kill & pluck a chicken I raised especially UNLESS I was very very hungry. Good luck!
btw...I found you while blog hopping and I can't remember who's blog it was but some crafty blog had linked to you :P

Those names are awesome! Don't let the kids get too attached. Guess when it comes time to butcher them, you can always say they ran away to find better food sources. That's what my parents told me when I was a kid when our cat AND dog ran away - "together".
I'm only down to one load myself! hehe Jenn

Cows? Cool.

a girl after my own heart... my family is in the meat business... has been since long before i was born... so there are cow things all over the house... and this just made me laugh out loud so much that i had to spell it and not just put lol...

Ha ha! I had sheep that had lambs which were named Lunch and Dinner. Even though I loved being with lunch and dinner it made the freezer part MUCH easier since every time I called their name I had to acknowledge that they would one day be their own namesake.

yeah, i think i would leave the job of explaining the excess meat in the freezer to my hubby too. HE is the meat lover, after all. i would be *way* too attached to meatloaf and sloppy joe. especially joe, he looks soooo sweet!

We raise beef cattle, I thought the first one would be difficult for me to eat but after I tasted the first steak that cured me. Now I can't stand to go into the store and look at the beef. We also had one that was rather disagreeable. We called him Diablo(devil in Spanish) We had an awful time with him, he went through a five strand barb wire fence and knocked my husband down and stepped on his wrist, good thing he has metal plates in his wrists from an accident.

We grew up eating our own meat. I had an Uncle (Jerry Lee) who was special and he always named the pigs after himself. So we had Pig Lee1, Pig Lee2, Pig Lee3 and so on.... The cows he never named. Go figure.

Totally giggle over your cows names. Too funny!

I bet you'll like them more than you think. I just found your blog and I just have to say Hi! and that I have been loving on all your projects! I'm so scouting out a chair to paint and recover!! Thanks for the inspiration.

We have one that's very similar to Sloppy Joe. Except his name is Wilbur and he was 'supposed' to be dinner'. He escaped death and is now the farm pet. He L.O.V.E.S the 4-wheeler! I think he feels like it's his brother and he will run next to it and kick up his feet. His brother never made it to our farm so I decided I just couldn't take Wilbur's life! So, since the grass has come out and the hay has been stacked away for the summer, Wilbur has gained a whopping 200lbs !!! Our farm is full of horses, and nearly one of every other animal known to a farm.

GOOD LUCK with the end result. it's tough

i'm doing laundry right along with you!!! i'm laughing at colleen's comment about not naming something you are going to eventually eat. :)

We have goats (three - pets) and we had 3 pigs (food) last year and we're get 6 more pigs this year (more food). And I agree. Don't name anything you plan on eating later. You won't be able to do it. I made it a point for our daughter not to name the pigs last year. They were just "the pigs" because I knew I would have a hard time when they were in my freezer.

Good luck with them. They are very cute! My husband wants cows for the meat. I refuse. They are just too cute.

i LOVE meat but i do think it would be a little hard to eat those. couldn't you just buy the whole cow already butchered and not become friends with your food?
my friend in rigby did that (is it a small town thing?)

Lynnae said...

I've heard of people doing this and trading with someone else who did the same thing, so as not to eat their own animals. Maybe if you have a garden you could just relate the calves with food that you grow and eat from the garden.

V....your pals, sloppy joe and meatloaf...how cute are they?! We never raised beef but one year we raised a turkey...I had to cook it in many separate meals and ways so that the kids would not know they were eating "him." Crazy.....Have a great week!

Love the names! We have chickens... we have one named Chicken Dinner and one named Chicken Nugget.

My experience has been that when your food starts to chase you and make your life miserable it is time to call the butcher!!! Named or not! They sure are cute for awhile though;)

QuiltNut Creations said...

we bought a cow a few years ago. i was fine with the whole thing until the farmer showed me our cow and said that it's name was Lonestar. for months after we brought the meat home, if one of the kids asked what was for dinner, dh always answered Lonestar.

Katy M. said...

couldn't you keep them for the milk? I think personally cows are far too cute to eat!

Sachiko said...

Those names are hilarious! I have to say though, if I were one of your kids and found out that sloppy joe was for dinner and that was the actual "Sloppy Joe", I would be a vegetarian after that meal. :)

Haha! Hilarious!

I love your humor. My hubby & I would have named our cows something irreverant like that too...bolgnese and shepherd's pie perhaps. Good luck with the kids (& husband) when the time comes.

Nystral Djo said...

growing up, i had some friends with a farm and their cow was named "burgers" - hah.

Andrea said...

What great names for your cows!
I love the concept of raising one's own food, but in my reality, it could never happen for us, I get waaaay too attached!

NO!
WAY!

I'm in love with Sloppy Joe and Meatloaf! One of my chickens I had named Omelet - love that you think like I do!

Ok, so back to the calfs. All I can muster up is another NO. WAY!

NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY!

Whispering... I want some too. But it's them ending up in the freezer part that has me weepy. But a good thick juicy steak should help cure the tears.

Cows! Oh great! I can't wait to see what they do. We still haven't recovered from the trauma of the goats!
