before and after

found at the second hand store for $25. i saw some potential.
sand it down, primer it, and spray paint it.

Editied: okay i can't stand all the "white" so i'm changing the pillow covers

and now it can be found in my laundry/mudroom...husband painted the laundry/mudroom this weekend. i went out on a limb and bought "blue-ish" paint. it was rather frightening to me when we were applying the paint how "periwinkle" blue it looked. husband assured me that it was going to darken and change as time went on. if i were to do it again i would go for a slightly darker shade...but all in all i like the color and how cheery my laundry room is now. so i should totally think that laundry is a cheery thing to do now...well another cold day in hell will happen before i associate "cheery" with laundry...

also husband would like to know why on earth i would put up baskets on the wall. i told him that i thought it looked cute...he said "whatevah"...and so they stayed up on the wall.

How cute. You did a great job finding that! I think your baskets DO look great on the wall - my hubby asks me similar questions and gets that answer!

Love this! Do you now where I could find its sister. it would go perfect in my kitchen. And I really love the paint colors you chose for the wall and bench.

That is a very bizarre piece of furniture! I don't think I have ever seen a chair combined with a cupboard! But in your usual way, you have transformed into something quite gorgeous. You have wonderful talent at seeing the beauty in something ... well, ... downright ugly!! Very impressive.

Love it!

We painted our laundry room, too, this weekend. And changed the flooring.

Oh, guess what I'm doing today with our gossip/phone chair? That is what they are called, I've been told by my MIL. She gave us one and we haven't done anything with it. I'm thinking a paint job will make it prettier for sure! Thanks for the idea!
Happy Spring!

ohhhhh I have a very similar piece, it was my parents & I saved it from the trash when I was a teenager.... Mom was "done" with it. I have been debating painting it for years.... you have inspired me (but mine will not be white! Maybe red?)

Lovely! I love the cream and polka dot fabric on the wreath and peaking out from the basket.

Adorable, V! Love finding great finds like this.

It's not the fact that you painted the room, but the fact that you have space in your laundry room to put a beauty like that in there!!!!!!!1

Great Job my friend. Love that you put some paneling on the cabinet. Love the baskets too, boys just don't understand do they!

Larissa@Just Another Day in Paradise said...

So on closer inspection, see that the original had paneling...well it shows up better with the white, so still a shout out to you.

Yes that is an old phone bench, used when we had phones that plugged into the wall, my parents had one. You could have a seat when getting into a chatty conversation. Your project turned out great! Wonderful work in the Bake Shop too!!

Treasuresofjoy said...

My Mom has an old phone bench like that.
Sorry to hear you take on laundry. I am kinda an "I love laundry" freak, now I am not so cheery about cleaning tubs and toilets, but I do it.
I love you makeover.

Betsy said...

Oh my gosh...you have so much goodness going on at your house right now!

LOOOOOVE the phone bench transformation!! Why am I never lucky enough to find stuff like that when I go to the second hand shops?!!
Fabulous!

Brooke said...

Yep. My husband would think I had lost my mind if I hung baskets on the wall. They just don't understand our creativity!!! :o)

I love the way the bench/cabinet turned out!

The bench is adorable.... but I'm with your husband on the baskets. The nice thing about wall decor is it can always be changed if one ever tires of it.

What a terrific job you did...I'd love to be able to refinish furniture like that! And the pillows, the paint, the baskets on the wall...they all go terrifically!

Mindy said...

I am amazed at how a coat of white paint made that change! Good job, V! You are the master of seeing potential!

Amy said...

When my husband has the nerve to ask questions like, "Why did you put that _______ on that ________?" I usually say something kind and respectful like, "I did it to piss you off."

Anonymous said...

YOu have such a good eye for things. I was inspired to go to the second hand store on Friday to see if I could find anything as cute as you find. I need to learn to see the potential in things.

looks fantastic!! what are you changing the pillow covers to?

Nash said...

so freakin cute.
seriously. i just saw something similar at goodwill here. i may have to snatch it up.
so you always primer huh? i am so impatient. i sand really quick and not very thoroughly, then spray away.i have only used black. think i will expand my color wheel and go for something different.

isn't it amazing what a little TLC can do for a neat thrift store find? I have a chair I need time to do much the same to...

My sis is Kiza- she blogs on her family here http://www.woelfels.blogspot.com/
I know she absolutely digs your blog but I don't see that she comments. Neat fact: she's going to get fabric today to make 3 easter baskets-one for each kiddo.

Um, LOVING the baskets on the wall! Can I just say Fabulous? I love seeing the potential. :)

So cute! You did an awesome job and I love the accesories. You know, men totally don't get baskets and plates on the wall. They just never will. And my hubby acts like I am the only one on the planet that does it.

So I have to be honest... I have NEVER liked those big beefy telephone side chairs. Ever. Until today. Who knew that a coat of spray paint could make it look so... light! Its adorable. And I am a bit embarrassed that I've passed them up. So cute.

Holy cow, girl! I look at your post (very cute, btw!) and I see "64 super cool people said..."!!! I don't think I even KNOW 64 people, let alone super cool ones! Way to go! p.s. can you come and help me re-paint by boys bunk beds and dressers? Do I really have to take it all apart and take it outside to paint it? I need to do something about the turquoise blue now that it is just a boys room.

That's IT! I'm headed to Goodwill tomorrow to look for one of these!
It's fabulous!

Love your projects.
I'm a newbie at refinishing.
Question about sanding - just a bit, or all over - major job?

V and Co. said...

sand it just to rough it up some. no need to do too much sanding, and yes all over. it's not a major job if you aren't trying to strip all the varnish and paint off. hope that helps

ooooooh I love Extreme Makeover: Furniture edition! I've done some myself. It's amazing what fresh coat of paint will do for an old piece. It looks amazing!

Do you know what it was used for originally? What a great little storage space for keys, phones, mail, etc...

you have a beautiful vision... I wish I could do stuff like that. I will have to look around for things to makeover with a coat of paint and reuse. Thanks for the inspiration!

The gossip bench in its fresh white coat of paint inspired me to re-do an old chair. I will have to sew up some new cushion covers which will be a new experience for me...I hope it turns out as pretty as yours.

I'm so mad! I saw this post and thought, "How cute! I want a bench like that. I've never seen one tho so I'll have to start looking!" Well, the VERY next day on Craigs list I found one! Just one hour after it was posted! I thought for sure I'd get it! But alas, she was showing it to a lady later that afternoon and it was gone. I wasn't very happy! I wanted a bench like you! haha I also just wanted to say thanks, I love reading your blog!

Thanks-

that looks so great! That's what I would love to do to half of our furniture, but my husband loves the look of unpainted wood and I think he would have a heart attack if I mentioned it. Maybe I'll start with something he doesn't love and show him how much better it can look. Beautiful inspiration!

I just love it. The whole setting looks nice with the baskets and all. I have a picnic basket exactly like your's, my mom gave me over 32 yrs ago or more. It is still natural just like yours.
Enjoyed your blog, came over from
