new way to hang plates 101

i love plates being on walls.
i wrote a whole post about it once.
but i hate the gross brassy plate hangers that help keep them up on the wall.
so i tried something new until i can get my hands on some of these:Invisible English Plate Hanger Disc-4 Inch (For Plates 8 to 12 Inches in Diameter)
*i got the hot glue gun out and some ribbon. (any ribbon or scraps of thinly cut fabric will work. i've tried both)
*once i put a nice dab of hot glue on the plate (on the rough part of the plate) and placed my ribbon on the hot glue, i then put another glob of hot glue on top just to seal it up a little more.
*i then went ahead and hung up my plates without the brassiness nastiness (please don't spell check that...i'm sure it's all kinds of wrong)
*****
i tried this a few weeks ago and waited to post it till now after i made sure that if you did try it, we wouldn't have crashing plates falling because of my suggestion. so far the hot glue has held up its side of the bargain at least in the small plate deal.
but i most definitely do not suggest hanging large frames this way or say 50lb mirrors...that would be just plain silly.
*if you are nervous about using hot glue you can always use stronger stuff like crazy glue or epoxy glue.
******
so remember:
*small plates= yes on the hot glued ribbon or fabric
*large 50lb frames or mirrors= stupid and silly to even try the hot glue idea.
don't say i didn't warn you.
let me know if you try it!
and i'll post when i get my
Invisible English Plate Hanger Disc-4 Inch (For Plates 8 to 12 Inches in Diameter)
and thell you how it works!

Great idea! I love the way it looks and I never even knew I disliked the brassiness nastiness until you pointed it out. I wonder if it might be even a little safer with epoxy or a stronger glue?

Have you tried the adhesive disks? I think I;d be more comfortable with something designed for the purpose on a particularly plate.

Here is the website for the adhesive disks... more sizes available than on Amazon.

(I haven't ordered from this company... so can't vouch for them)

I worry with the hot glue that it will take several months, but eventually may become brittle and break off. That is what generally happens with the bows I make for my girls. The glue takes a long time to dry all the way, but eventually becomes brittle. Maybe you can give us an update in a few months.

Thanks for all your super ideas! Keep them coming.

I used the adhesive hangers that you can buy to hang pictures. They actually worked really well. Now for the big ones? Hmm....Haven't tried that yet.

I recently hung plates on the wall with those Command picture hanging strips that are like velcro, and it worked really well. No crashing plates so far! The ones I hung were small though, I haven't tried big ones with those, but I bet it would be fine b/c I've hung other pretty heavy mirrors and pictures with them. They come in different weight/strengths.

I have also spray painted mine to match the color of the plate...okay so that is when I also spray paint the plate. That way it just camo's right in.

Great idea...I never thought of that. I've just sprayed the ugly brassy ones white to match my white plates.

I hate plate hangers and do everything to avoid them - I will try this out!

Great tip!!! I'd probably go for a heavier duty glue b/c I am paranoid, but you could always just snip the ends off the ribbon on the back if you got tired of the ribbon and no one would be the wiser. :) I like this alternative to plate hangers!

Those plate things are awful. I never thought of using the glue gun on them. I have one that is a collectors plate and I am sure worth some money, I have a plate thing on that for saftey reasons.

great idea! I just started hanging plates to distract from the nasty, need to be painted walls in our rental!

You crazy risk-taking decorator, you! I think I'm gonna try it, but I might use Gorilla Glue. Cross your fingers!!

What a great idea! Now there's nothing to distract from the prettiness of the plates.

Has anyone tried to silicone these? My sis in law used to silicone the saucers and tea cups together for bird feeders...just a thought.

No Way!! Time to whip out the glue gun...

I have a big, heavy mirror like the one in your first picture. Is that a door knob or drawer pull it is hanging on? I am scared to just put a nail in the wall. I'll have to try that! Great ideas... thanks :O)

Hot glue is our friend but sometimes it fails us!! One night while laying in bed you'll hear a crash and think "The hot glue..not such a good idea". I've learned this lesson the hard way!!

That looks a lot better, but boy would it make me nervous. Does the hot glue peel off of the plates if you decide to remove it? I would think it would, but have never tried it.

I'm too lazy to ever research plate hangers, but I totally agree with you that the brass isn't so cute. I have a circle of plates hanging in our kitchen and I would like to try this someday (after I make everything I need to).

I'm too cheap to by the English plate hangers so when I hung my plates I used

Command Picture hanging strips by 3M.
Here is the link to my post plus there is a coupon to use on the Command products that is good until the 31st of this month.

The strips work great and having been hanging tight since May!
Love the ribbon and hot glue tip though how clever are you!

Love it. Looks great so much better w/out the hooks. I did a post on this same thing back in February. This is something I've done for years and have never had anything fall. It all started when I was a newly married girl w/not much money(even for plate hangers) and a vision. I've also cut the ribbon longer and used duck tape over the ribbon.
: )

I also don't like the plate hanger look, though my most recent platter was too heavy for hot glue. Didn't like how it looked and painted the tips of the hanger the same as the platter and it is much better. Need to post a new picture.

Hope to redo my picnic basket w/your fabric top idea soon. Love that too.

Uh....hopefully your plate will fall onto soft carpet when the glue decides to "give it up". Ask me how I know! Hobby Lobby carries 3 inch Disc plate hangers for $1.99 each to hold up to an 8 inch plate.

Looks great! I dont have any plates hanging up, but want to eventually. I agree on not liking being able to see the hangers. Another blog I read used Command Picture Hanging strips to hang hers.

I have been wanting to do this for a while!! This is just the motivation I need! Thanks

Yay! I'm doing this as soon as I get home and I'm so linking a post to this on my blog! I hate the wire hangers for plates and have taken down mine because they looked weird.
Thanks!

YAY! PERFECT! Could I even go out on a limb and splat some MOD PODGE over the dried glue to dry it up and stick and stay together better? Okay, maybe MOD PODGE isn't the EVERYTHING bandaid, but I'd probably do it just for security! hee hee.

Is that mirror from Pottery Barn? I swear, I saw a mirror just like that in one of their catalogs once, wanted to order it, but didn't. I LOVE that mirror. And the plates are pretty cool too! Wanna come to Florida and decorate MY house? :o)

Hello, Just found your blog from Just A Girl. Anyway, I haven't read EVERYTHING yet (I've been drooling over pics too much to read it all quite yet) but I did notice how you said you hated the gold plate holders and wondered why you don't just spray paint them white? Then they would just blend in with the white plates, with no fear of the glue falling off and breakage. Easy, peazy fix. ;) Love the idea though. ;)

Bummer! It's too hot here for hot glue - it always melts and stuff falls off ~Page
