i'm almost done with katie's new dress. i just have to add the bias tape on the bottom of the dress and attach the skirt slip that will go under the skirt, then i can call it good.
with this dress i wanted to try to learn how to do bias tape and adding it to the neck and arm holes. with every dress or article of clothing i want to learn just a little bit more. i've been meaning to learn this for a while and so i decided it was about time.
the fabric was $2 a yard fabric from walmart (i was too nervous to use the nicer stuff. the bias tape and inside lining was made out my remnants of my thrift sheets).
i didn't use a pattern, the top is close to simplicity 6688 ( i used it for sizing). but i just sort of made it up as i went.
now if i didn't suffer from the disease called: "the inability to make the size that my daughter is right now", she could of worn this right now. but see, i always make (not buy though) things too big for her. she will look super cute in this maybe by the end of this summer, but for sure by next summer it will look great on her.
oh well i guess it's genetic because my mom's been buying clothes for the kids (including socks and shoes) that will fit them in a year or two... since the first day my oldest was born.
some things are hard to shake out of your genetic pool.

I don't know exactly what my problem is (other than having a REALLY skinny daughter) but she ends up having to grow into just about everything I make too!!!

Vanessa, I have the same problem with making or buying things too big for my daughter. Especially when I order a dress for her from a fancy, way too expensive catalog! It may be that feel like I am getting my money's worth by staring at it in her closet for a year! One problem, my husband does not understand me when I say the kids have no clothes to wear. After all, he seen the credit card bill and the full closet..... Anyways, I LOVE your blog! You have great style. I get lots of inspiration from you. I just wish I would act on it!

Don't worry, I have the same problem. I make things that are too large for my daughter and MYSELF! I have made things for myself that I will NEVER "grow in to."

Your talents amaze me! That dress will be so cute on your daughter, and until she fits in it you could decorate with it in her room. Maybe hang it and another dress or two from clothes pins in her room?!

Oh! I FINALLY remembered to check out the sheets at a garage sale this morning! I found a cute set of girly sheets for $1. When we get settled in our new home I will look at your blog to find what to make my daughters. Maybe matching dresses? Maybe use it on a quilt? I would have never thought of those ideas on my own. that's funny! aidan has holes in the knees of all of his 3T jeans but I refuse to buy anymore 3T bc I know he won't get much more use out of him. but 4T is huge on him right now. so we're just patching them up for now. he's a boy. he's supposed to look rought and tumble! cute dress! maybe one day i'll have a girl to dress up!
You know I love dots. Could you take a couple of darts front and back to just make it fit? I used to do that for my girl when she was little.

That's what I did when I taught myself how to sew. With each project I learned something new.
I remember when I learned how to sew in pockets or sew in sleeves. I ripped out a lot, but eventually everything turned out great.

The dress is so cute and bias tape isn'tthat hard to do. It doesn't hurt to have things a bit big and to get ahead a bit.

Love it! It actually reminds me of a bowl (milk glass with orangy red dots the same size as on the dress) that my mom used to have! I loved that bowl....great job on the dress~ she will look adorable in it!

As for making things too big...I always buy too big and then forget about them. So, as long as you don't forget about the shoes, socks, dresses...you're good:o)
