our not so beautiful tree

so this is a story, about mr v and co the christenson's deciding that this year they were going to go and cut down their own christmas tree.

mr v and co says " hey wife of mine, i think this year we should cut down our own tree."

"yay." i say enthusiastically. not.

i think to myself, it's cold and we have a perfectly good "tree A" from hellmart that has served us well for 9 years now.

"i thought you were all into creating traditions and isn't martha stewart all into getting real trees." mr v and co delivers a low blow.

"don't bring martha into this, and yeah we already HAVE a tradition:
...get out "tree A" the day after thanksgiving, assemble "tree A", put up the white lights on the tree, and the gold ribbon from the first time we had our first tree, tell the kids they can put up so and so ornaments, cringe when they find and continue to clump up all the ornaments that they've EVER made at school and walk away, till you can re-arrange them a little more evenly all over...just to have the whole christmas season changing it back as the kids "re-arrange" it in clumps again the way it "should" be. and so forth. you know kind of like a tennis match."

"yeah, but don't you think the smell of fresh pine in the house will be great?!" he says with his eyes lighting up.

i quickly think of the candle i just bought with the label "fresh pine tree" on it.

i decide to let it go.

"okay, fine we can cut down our own tree."
and so we did.
and he let me do the honor of picking the tree. because he knows i'm super uh "picky."

wow, i never noticed how many dang trees there are.
and well i ended choosing this one. because it was cold and there were too many to choose from and... it.was.cold.

notice the monster that took a bite out of it on the side? also notice the haphazard way the ornaments and lights are all strewn about?...read on.

as mr. v and co. stood up after putting it into the base, he stood back and let out one huge laugh with a "OH MY GOSH" in it...until he covered his mouth and replied,
"good job picking out an awesome tree hun!" slap on the back...

"ugh, i hate it. it's hideous!"

just then the boys come by all excited "WOW!!!! awesome!!! i can't believe we got a REAL tree this year!!!"

and then the question that i get asked every.single.year.
"CAN WE PUT UP THE COLOR LIGHTS?!!!!!"

which to that i usually answer "nooo, lets keep it more simple and mono-chromatic with just white lights."
and on we go.

BUT THIS YEAR i thought "it's already a hideous tree why not?"

"okay" i say out loud. to which the kids just sit and stare at me with deer in headlights looks.
i can see their brains working really hard with this and it looks a little like:

"not.processing.information."

they snap out of it and excitedly they get going on the tree...with the dang colored lights.
and oh look at that... they find all their ornaments from school year pasts and start talking about " i wonder what we're going to make this year for ornaments..." as they clump them up on two branches.
not only that but they've managed to find ornaments i didn't even knew were still around or even had.
the tree was getting overloaded as each moment passed.

*sigh*

i look back to mr v and co and he has a huge grin on his face.

"what?"

"nothing, i just think it's funny that you finally have given in completely. how does it feel to lose total control over the christmas tree?"

"stupid."

"you feel stupid?" he says.

"no, you are stupid." i retort.
his grin gets bigger.

and with that we sit back watching our kids make the "hideous tree" turn into "a beast of a hideous tree."

and that my friends, will go down in history as the year mom's eye twitched every time she passed the christmas tree.

i think that after christmas i'm just going to unplug it and throw it away just like that.
i'll show them losing control.

hahahhaha. LOVE THIS STORY.
and you must have just posted. I'm the first comment!

Yea, it's a funny little tree. But I'm sure your kids will remember this Christmas even when they're grown and buying trees of their own. I still remember the year my mom caved and we got a flocked tree. We LOVED it. I would **HATE** one of those in my house now.

Way to please the masses :)

fabulous lol!! and this is exactly why i have TWO trees in our house(okay we have 7 but really who is counting? besides hubby that is)

Chris the Quilter said...

LOL!!!!

mu hubby has his own tree (for "grown up" ornaments)

kids put theirs up without sanction

....and I decorate everything else that stands still for more than 5 minutes....according to eldest daughter

sreiously, I have 3 trees in my studio alone......

Sometimes the decor has to be about the people (read kids) living there, even if it does give us moms a "twitch" to look at it. This year, our Charlie Brown tree is going downstairs, and *sigh* I'm not going to have a tree upstairs. I hear ya on the colored lights though!

I laughed so hard... mainly because I see myself reacting the exact same way. Ah well, just make a really strong eggnog to fix that eye twitch?

HAHAHA!!!!!!! We always go and cut down our tree and I LOVE IT! It's a tradtition that my father started with us when we were young...anywho, I DO know where you are coming from with the colored lights...I HATE THEM! But my husband throws a fit every year and I give in. Oh well.

this year we are having a tree, but it is the first tree we have had for at least 10 years, even if it is artificial, If i was to have a real tree, (which is why my family banned them) because i would go and look for the saddest tree that was neglected, spindly and on it's last legs cos i felt that was the tree that needed the most love. I have always felt this way. and when i read your story, laughing all the while i took another look at the picture and i felt, no that tree still looks TOO GOOD!!
Merry Christmas to you all. XXXXXXXXXXXx

Well just store this for the time when its pay back time.

Someday you will laugh about this!
Did the paypal thing ever work? I can't tell. If not, you can just send me an invoice. Oh, and any quilt news?
The strawberry shortcake is so cute. If I didn't have so much else to make, I might go into a food making frenzy and make a bunch of food for my daughter. Maybe I'll try to make that and the turkey at least. She's getting a kitchen for Christmas- I'm so excited!! Oh and it's pink- even better!

Oh my goodness, what a wonderful way to start the day with a good laugh!!! You'll remember this 'special' tree for a looooong time!

This story made me laugh! This is the exact reason we have 5 trees. One is the "kid" tree with all their ornaments. The other trees are "my" trees. I have photos on my blog www.livyloudesigns.blogspot.com.

Well I think it's erm...lovely. And to all of you multiple tree people, :P I can barely talk myself into putting one tree up! Happy holidays everyone!

It's awful in a wonderful way! You love it bc they love it. But...it is not pretty! I'm so proud of you for "giving in"! It better smell like pine!

great story, I feel a bit like you, however I vow not to touch my tree after my 8yr old decorated it. So what if it's missing ornaments on one whole side. lol

My sister always says how she is envious of our tree b/c the kids don't help yet. I know my day is coming so even now I try not to stress too much. I am glad that you let go and let them go crazy. Such a good mom! :)

10 years from now your kids will probably remind you of the best Christmas tree ever.... and it will be this one! I'm super OCD, but I find that on the occasions that I let go, love, precious moments, and magical memories have room to create! Happy holidays...

It's a beautiful tree because you picked it out and the kids decorared it with the colored lights! Sometimes just letting go makes everyone happy!

Next year though...payback! LOL

Oh my goodness...this is too funny!
Now I feel guilty for my white lights on the tree rather than the colored ones everyone has wanted since they were old enough to talk. ;o) Oy! May head to WalMart for a few strands of colored!

I love the tree, but I love all Christmas trees. My older son has severe Cerebral Palsy and he adores the trees. We lay him on the floor next to the tree and he makes noises like he's talking to it, grinning the whole time. We sometimes let him sleep under it, because he loves it so much. We put colored lights and tons of ornaments- mismatched, school-made, Hallmark, you name it. So, enjoy the holidays, enjoy your family and really, who gives a rat's ass if the tree is monochromatic.

SUMMERSTEAD said...

Great story! Just the laugh I needed this early in the morning! I refuse to do real trees, or to use colored lights, and I also fight with my boys about what ornaments are going on it. Last year I found a 3' tree on clearance and bought it for the boys' room. They can decorate that one however they want this year. I don't think we even own a set of colored lights, though, so I'll have to buy a set!

Your tree is beautiful, in a Charlie Brown kind of way!

Bonnie said...

This is hilarious! We all have a similar story though! How sweet that Jake even cares one way or the other. I am sure this Christmas will be remember by Mr. V & Co!

Love it! Sounds just like our Christmas tree over here...cut down ourselves, colored lights, clump iof handmade ornaments. I try and help it along with bows or ribbon, but there is only so much one can do :)

Great funny post!!!That tree is hideously great and you're great for allowing your family their fun.

Now pick yourself up off the floor and go buy a couple of 2-3 ft fake trees, place those beauties around your house, and decorate them till your heart's content...hc

Awww. I love your tree. It looks like MY tree but I don't have any kids to blame. I like odd, un-perfect trees with lots of open spaces for ornaments. I am going a little more homemade/handmade with my tree this year than in years past.

Cheers!

Hahaha, great story Vanessa! I love it when you tell stories like this - it's just so funny and sarcastic. Alex actually promised me that I could get my first real tree this year and I am so excited! Hopefully it turns out just as good as yours did ;)

you are too funny! i hope the tree smells good (at least!) Your story reminded me of the year my family decided to cut our own tree..we picked one that looked like a reasonable size compared to all the other trees in the woods, but got it home and it was GIGANTIC! We couldn't even fit it in the living room and ended up cutting off the whole top of the tree. But see? I've never forgotten that...and neither will you, your kids or Mr V and co. Now that's the spirit of Christmas.

I loved your story... and your tree even more! We had plenty of those "charlie brown" trees before we bought our fake one. Plus, you're being the mom every kid wishes they had this year and I'm... not. I haven't even got the tree out yet, and I'd probably be okay if we never did this year. I don't know what's wrong with me! Maybe it's that Brandon is working the 23rd through the 26th, 18 hour days, and we won't even see him on Christmas. Sigh... Sorry, didn't mean to get all depressing after your amazingly funny post! Love you, V!

I have two trees.

I get to decorate the one that we put in front of the front window. It's got white lights and a color scheme.

The other tree smaller and is in the family room. My boys get to decorate that one. It's got the colored lights and all the homemade ornaments on it (all clumped together on a few branhes, of course.)

I figure this arrangement keeps everyone happy!

You are so funny! I love all your stories. So fun to read. What a great family you have.

This story sounds exactly like what would happen to us if my husband decided to go cut a tree. That was his family tradition growing up. I haven't given in yet. But the dialog and all… that's exactly what would happen to us.

ahh...what I wouldn't give for that imperfect real tree. I think the little nooks and crannies created by the imperfections are perfect for tucking little gifts into...

Ashli said...

this is funny! I had to smile as I read it because that is exactly what we go through EVERY year. I make up chili (except this year), and "real" hot cocoa and up we head. last year we were able to get a 14' one with our vaulted ceilings, but the new house just won't take that kind, so we're back to the clumped up little one. We have more snow, so we were able to sled a bit too. the kids love it...you'll have your chance at the simple-all-matching one before you know it. that's what i keep telling myself!

Amie Kirk said...

I laughed out loud! Then I had to read it again, and I laughed out loud a second time :-) What a great story, and wonderful memories! Christmas isn't about the tree anyway. Just remember, God sees the beauty in our imperfections! Thank God we don't have to be the "perfect" tree for Him to pick us! Merry Christmas!

You'll have years of memories and when your children are grown they will crack up looking at the pictures. Love it and it resembles the true spirit of Christmas. Giving up control in our life because our great Savior has it all anyways.

OMG ~ laughing with tears running down my face!
We get a real tree every year ~ I insist ~ I am a nut when it comes to the perfect tree...we have been known to walk around for hours in sub zero temps and drive as far as 2 hours away to cut one...decorating with the kids is sometimes a bit of a challenge for me...almost and anxiety attack!
;-)
I do love the tree though ~ most of all your story and think your kids will always remember it. It reminds me of my cousins and their father who always waited till the very last minute to pick out their "Charley Brown" tree from the last ones left on the tree lot....fun memories. :-)
Enjoy and Happy Holidays ~ Rebecca
as for colored lights...don't think I could have given in on that one.

I can't stop laughing! We decided to cut our own tree last year. (Never again!) we even went to a tree farm in TN were we lived. The only trees they had for cutting down were Leyland cypress trees. Ugly trees! not real Christmas trees at all. There was no talking my hubby into buying the already cut Frasier Firs (love!) No we were going to create a tradition!

Fast forward to when we start decorating the tree. My arms broke out in little red bumps and itched like crazy! I was allergic to the stupid thing! So Hubby and the kids got to do all the decorating.

Fast forward to when it was time to take it down. The stupid tree dried so much that the needles were super poky like thorns! We managed to get all the ornaments off and most of the lights on. Then I just looked at hubby and said, it can keep the lights! We then took it outside and dumped it in the back yard where we let it really dry out before burning the dang thing!

Never again! This year we got a nice douglas fir and I tested it on my arms before bringing it home!

i am in HYSTERICS over this. we go out to cut our tree this weekend as we have done for the past TEN years since meeting my husband. yeah, that 'fresh pine' smell in the house camp and it must be a REAL tree, etc. AND i at times give in to the colored lights for the kid - oh WAIT, the 40-yr-old hubby IS the kid - and the 'yearly' ornaments, WELL, that's my gig. so cheers to you for a NEW tradition hey! warm hugs from colorado, rachel

I am incredibly picky about my tree. My solution to the school ornaments was to get a small fake tree for only those ornaments, and I have to say, it has become my favorite! You can see last year's trees here: http://tutuspartyoffive.blogspot.com/search?q=boomama's+christmas+tour

So far this year, I have a naked tree in one part of the room, and pumpkins and fall leaves still in another part. And 2 kids and one husband with a dreadful cold and another kid with vomit. We may have our "nekkid" tree for a while!

SO funny. It looks like the tree we used to bring to the missionaries every year.

My mom had a perfect (fake) tree for the house because my brother was allergic to real pine trees. Then we'd go pick out a real tree and bring it to the missionaries with a box of ornaments that mom didn't allow on her tree - the hideous castaways, school project ornaments, etc. It ALWAYS had colored lights. :) Lucky them.

Camille said...

AWESOME. Now THAT is a tree! Way to go one being such a good mom. You are a better woman than I!

Sophie said...

Too funny for words! Reality is so much of a bucket of cold water! Our first Christmas tree was a tiny little thing in a pot. I wanted to do the whole real scent of pine, lets plant it in the garden thing. It started dying probably the day after we bought it and shed needles ALL over everything. Needless to say, the very next year we bought a decent fake one and haven't gone back since. Sad but true.

Cannon Clan said...

i love your story, we did the same thing this year, real tree, colored lights, and all those pritty home made ornaments. the upside is that one is upstairs and "mom's" tree with the white lights and gold and red ribbon with matching ornaments is down stairs. ahhhh

Clark Family said...

Funny, we always do two trees. Mine is the large artificial tree thats sturdy enough to hold my ornaments and sparkling white lights and for the kids we do a small real tree (tradition to go cut down) with whatever they want on it. It was a tradition growing up. I caved and got a real tree this year for the smell and whatever else I was guilted with and never, ever again will I get a real tree. I love my fake one!!

quirky granola girl said...

I love colored lights and I still have an ornament that I made when I was 5. My mom finally gave it to me because she didn't want me to look for it on her tree anymore.
With that, I'll probably get a kid that wants white lights and to measure the perfect distance between matching ornaments. That would be enough to make me twitchy.

Busy Little Quilter said...

I love your story!

Now you have me in the mood to put up our Christmas tree. Our Christmas tree is artificial (because I'm allergic to real ones). We bought a new one for this year after we realized that our youngest daughter was taller than the tree that we have had for the past 16 years (since she's been born). She grew, but it didn't.

Thanks for putting me in the Christmas spirit!

Too funny! I fight with my husband every year about the tree. He wants to buy a fake one and the kids and I love the real ones. I actually laughed out loud at this one! It was the picture of the tree first then I was a lost cause . . . the rest of the story I couldn't stop laughing. Your story actually made me laugh out loud. Sitting by myself in the sewing room. I can totally relate. We used to always cut down our own tree - usually from the side of the road in the middle of the night. One year, we got the tree home and discovered it was missing branches on one side... so we cut some off the bottom when we trimmed the trunk, and NAILED them to the bare side. It was the saddest little tree... but we loved it because we had such a good story to tell. And laugh about!
p.s. Now we live in the 'city' and we have to buy our tree!

This is so me, too! My husband is always the one who asks for the colored lights. I wonder, "honey? haven't you seen our ornaments? Don't you inherently know that they will look better with white lights?" I finally have acquiesed to allow SOME colored lights outdoors and we do have a (now basement/kids room relegated) 4-1/2 foot tall fake tree with pre-lit colored lights all upon it. I hope that it fills that need for colored lights. For now, my big, bushy, fake tree with white lights is happily sitting in my living room.

This made me laugh! Thanks for posting!

Love it, love it, love it! Seriously your kids will remember this tree FOREVER! We once had a Charlie brown tree when I was little, and at family gatherings we still reminisce about the time we thought it would be a good idea to chop down our own tree, and my crazy dad that thought an ATV (or goat) path was worthy of driving a mini van on just to get that darn tree. That twisty little path then caused my brother to vomit on the unsuspecting innocent dog, refusing to leave the car because he thought we would leave him there in the middle of the woods. Yeah, never again!

Look at it this way - it is something to laugh at hahaha

Oh it's beautiful. :) It will probably also go down in history as the kids favorite tree. :)

It looks perfect to me.

Seriously I laughed so hard I cried, like real tears. OMG! I think because I can totally relate as the tree is "my thing". I do white lights & totally rearrange the decorations.

Last night my 6 yo finally gave up on me putting our holiday decorations up & started decorating the house to his liking, nothing over 4ft high, all clumped together, etc. :)

V - I am a long time reader of your blog, love the way you make me laugh and inspire me to create! I just never comment because you don't know me.

BUT I had to share my light story....I had the same problem with loving white lights and my kids loving colored lights. This is my solution - I put them both on the tree connected to separated extention cords so when the kids are home I plug in the colored lights and when they go to school, I get to plug in the white ones. It is a great compromise! And guess what? My favorite now is when both sets are plugged in. I love the white lights mixed with the colored! Who knew???

You are great, love to read your blog. I had to make mine private because I had a weird stalker from Venezuela so just email me if you want to check out who I am. dmullin@ptera.net

What a fun story! That's why we have 2 trees now. One for the kids to decorate anyway they want and one for me :)

Awww...come on. You'll miss the quintessential "kid" tree when your kiddos are grown. There is time enough ahead to have perfectly decorated theme trees!

I was laughing out loud reading this story. I might have woken up everyone in the house :-) Enjoy the tree. Just see the colours and ornaments as lots of love. Oh, and it's gone in a couple of weeks :-D

I was going to suggest (as several others already have) that you should put up two trees. The perfectly shaped artificial tree with your white lights and matching ornaments will be for you; and the scary thing in the pictures can be for your kids. That's my plan once my son is old enough to notice his ornaments aren't on "my" tree. : )

I'm VERY impressed! I can't believe YOU picked out a tree that ugly!...Charlie Brown, maybe, but you?? Seriously...You never cease to amaze me! I think you'll remember it as your favorite tree ever when your kids are gone, though. I think it's great!

I have to say I LOVE your tree and you will remember this tree always... much more so than your picture perfect tree... and your kids will have fabulous memories of it as well... seriously good on you for giving in! It's fabulous! We always chose and cut our own tree at Christmas time... we also decorated it (my mother was pretty anal about how it should be decorated, but we did it our way anyway!!! she would go around and "tidy" it up afterwards) gosh we had fun though and it really made christmas for us... here's hoping you will give in every year... i say hear hear to the idea of 2 trees, one for you and one for the kids!!

hahahaha! i am dying! hilarious story!
i hate that battle between having a pretty tree and one the kids feel love and help with.

That is freakin' Hillarious!!!! You are a much stronger woman than I. We own our own tree that we put up every year for the past 10 yrs. I now am just waiting for the days when my kids get old enough to start making some of the decisions about how the tree gets decorated... Lord, give me strength! LOL... thanks for the laugh!

OMG! That is so funny! Several years ago my sister and I stayed with my cousin and her husband for a few days and while we were there we decided to put up the tree. So instead of wait for her husband to come home, we three girls take off walking through the woods with a hacksaw to find our perfect tree! About two hours later we came dragging in a very haevy, very big, very prickly cedar tree. We did not cut it close to the ground, because it was already so tall, she cut it a little above her waist. When her husband got home he ended up cutting like 4 more feet off of the tree just so it would fit in the house. It was so ugly! It had two tops in it, and when we cut one out it left this huge whole, which made it match the rest of the tree! After that he made her go to the tree lot every year!
I think we all have these funny Christmas tree stories! (like the one on my blog)

Oh my gosh, you are so hilarious. I like the big moose thing eating the tree it made me laugh! You remember in the movie Christmas Vacation where they get the HUGE tree they cut down, and it busted out the windows? Well, when we moved into our house 4 years ago, we decided to get a TALL tree because we have vaulted ceilings. Yes, well you have to figure that it's as WIDE as it is TALL, that tree took up our whole living room, I was surprised it didn't break out the windows too. My 7 & 8 year old decorate just like yours, you are not alone :)

Oh this is too darned funny!!!! I too, have so many tree stories! I had to add yours to my post about the Griswald's Christmas trees, I hope you don't mind!!!!!!

Unknown said...

HYSTERICAL!!! Your a brave woman! Do you have a cat? If you get one, I bet it would knock the darn thing down and what a bummer that would be...

I did the same thing about 15 years ago with one addition - we didn't think about the nests of spiders that had made their home in our christmas tree and came out when it got warm in the house! The kids still laugh about it

I am loving this story! I actually laughed out loud. Me and mine have a little saying when things don't go quite as planned,"Making Memories!" And your kids definantly have a memory they will never forget. Way to go V & Co.
