this summer we've had a couple of firsts. this was our first full summer in the midwest. this summer we went to chicago for the first time. this summer we saw our first scary storm. well scary for us because we've never heard the sirens go off before that day. there was this weird look to the sky and then all of a sudden the clouds were scooped to the side and what was left behind was the greenish dark blue sky. the only way i could describe it was that it looked like someone was skimming their hand next the clouds and pushing them over as they folded over each other. kind of like if you had some soap bubbles on the the top of a bowl of water, and moved the bubbles over to one side. it was eery, as my neighbor and i scrambled to get the patio furniture close to the house or in the house we looked up then looked at each other, we each said "oh swear word" mine was actually that phrase as we stared at it, and then each took a picture and then she yelled at me "GET INSIDE!"
the picture i took didn't do it justice, but i had to get inside before whatever force that was pushing the clouds like that got to where i was standing.
it all ended a few hours later, and a few phone calls finally reaching my husband and son who were out at scout camp, (they were safe in a shelter) we lost power for over 12 hours.
so far the clouds keep our family in awe. i don't think we've ever experienced soooo many cool looking clouds and sky. it's really beautiful. the corn is really on the sad side i've been told due to the lack of rain we've been having...but i'm hoping to get some fun corny pictures. if i could take a picture of the fireflies over the corn fields and do it justice i would.
but honestly it's breath taking and i don't think i could get a picture to even show you that phenomenon. :)
we are really enjoying our surroundings. it's neat to see new things even as a middle aged gal like myself.

We lived in Kansas when I was a little girl. I learned very early that when the sky turns kind of greenish you don't want to be outdoors!
I miss those amazing Midwestern skies (well, perhaps not the green one you describe!) I love the huge clouds floating over golden cornfields floating in the endless blue...

I had never seen fireflies before moving to the south. Aren't they magical!

Don't you love the smell of the corn? Wish I lived closer to the edge of town and it was cooler, so I could open my windows and smell it every night when going to bed!
I now live in Maine but grew up in Michigan and we learned early to watch the sky. A couple weeks ago here some conditions came together that created a very different, yellowish sky with bizarre clouds...as we all talked about it the next day at work you could tell who was originally from Maine and who was a Midwest transplant... We were the ones trying to decide if we should move the kids and pets to the basement!
born and raised in kansas and still live here! green skies mean hail and hail can (but not always) mean a tornado. the best part about kansas, at least the part where i am from, is that it's so flat you can see the tornado coming for miles! :)
i'm glad that most of you summer has been GOOD firsts!
We lived in Iowa for 4 years while my hubby was in school, and these storms are one of the things I miss most! I remember hearing the sirens for the first time and about having a heart attack! I LOVE the midwest and would move back there in a heartbeat!

we used to live in Illinois and I remember going out for a drive with the family one summer evening and seeing the fireflies over the cornfields. It truly is a breathtaking sight...and dumb me didn't have my camera. I bet if you took a tripod with you you could do it justice.
those storms can be scary and I remember the sirens going off all too well. Don't miss that at all.

Oh, this makes me miss my childhood in farmtown Illinois. We saw a lightning bug in our backyard this year. I supsect he was horribly lost after hitching a ride on some unsuspecting RV.

I have traveled out that way dozens of times and also lived down south, those green skies can be terribly scary. They are just so unnatural. I have to say though for beautiful blue skies and big puffy white clouds, it doesnt get any better than where you are!
You're hilarious! Middle-aged -- pah! And you can say poop at any age. Those clouds look vicious. I live in the Midwest and I do not like seeing them. Luckily, this year was not bad for tornadoes -- yet.
I am originally from Iowa and I say "poop" too. Maybe it's an Iowa thing. I've been saying it for as long as I can remember and I am a little past middle aged.

Yes, the sky should not be green! We had a tornado here in Maryland about 11 years ago and it looked just like that. Scary.
I have to tell you: I read your blog, pushed the button to get to the next blog in my reader and it was about a Wizard of Oz quilt!! Hehehe
I grew up in the Midwest and we too listened for the sirens and watched the sky. We were very leary of the green/yellow tint of the sky. My dear mother says the word "poop" and it always makes me laugh! MOM!!! :)
Night skies are also beautiful in the midwest...we love watching lightening storms here in Missouri. Happy to hear you surivived the green skies without too much trouble. Smiles~Beth
I've lived in the midwest (well, Oklahoma, which can't really claim any section...central plains maybe?) for 25 years and the sky is my most favorite thing. Hands down. I'm glad you are enjoying the amazing clouds.
That looks like the storm clouds I got a pic of on friday (im in north dakota) right before we had 80mph wind plus 5 inches of rain. We had a 35 ft tree up root and missed landing on the house by mear inches. It did smash the a/c unit and our heating fuel tank. As I was taking shelter my car was moved 6 inches from where I parked it before I was able to run in (it came up so fast, ive never been so scared since my car felt like it was floating while it was parked) my town had a lot of tree limb loss and 3 trees up rooted, mine being one (it was my main tree in my laundry line :{ ). We might loose the other 4 as well as it looks like they have root damage also (fingers crossed we can keep them). The poor corn fields around our town are also all laid flat so its a sad sight. glad you guys kepted safe.

I had drove up to the storm shelter when my car was moved, I wasnt taking shelter in my car just to clear that up.
I've lived in Michigan most of my life and the worst storm we ever had in my city (1980 and some lost power for a week) is referred to by everyone I know as the "green sky" storm.

I am glad you all survived your first midwest storm. I grew up in Oklahoma so I know the sounds of sirens and hanging out in the basement waiting for things to pass. I don't remember clouds like that though they are beautiful!

:-D There's no way to capture the glory that is Iowa fireflies. Unless you have an HD camcorder.... even then, the real thing is breathtakingly beautiful. Sadly, I grew up on the outskirts of Marion and all the fields where I used to watch them are now brand new expensive Skogman neighborhoods... :-(
