guest tutorial blogger: taylor of MaryJane and Galoshes

so i don't get out much. no, not like as in out of my home, it feels like i'm always running full speed somewhere or need to be doing something. no, i mean as in i don't get out much of my little corner of the blogworld. see, i know there's like a lot of awesome tutorial blogs out there. i competed against 9 of them in SYTYC...but with quite a busy schedule (parenting, volunteering, church volunteering, running a home, running a shop and blog, wanting to seeing my husband, have time in there to create new things, and blah de blah)...my staying in the "know" of other blogs has gone down to almost "0". (i have a confession i quit checking my google reader like a month ago because it had 1000+ on it for over 3 months. i KNOW!)
BUT i do in fact take note of where my traffic is coming from and one site that directs a lot of traffic my way is kari's blog U-Create (hi kari!) so i went over there one day to say thanks for featuring me and what did i see?

a little button that showed
this amazing tutorial of a new blogger. it just so happens that that tutorial actually made me kind of jealous that in the past i didn't care that much for paper and scrap booking stuff. so what did i do? i went out and bought that scallop punch thingy. oh yes i did.

i'm really glad i went over to that tutorial because i met taylor and she is sweet as can be and pretty talented too in the graphic arts stuff. check out her etsy shop! (taylor i love my tags btw!)
but enough from me...give a welcome to taylor:

Hi! My name is Taylor and I write MaryJanes and Galoshes. I first found V and Co. watching the first season of So you think your crafty and fell in love with her blog. In mid January (of this year) I started MJ&G, I'm very new here and hope you will come say hello. So needless to say I'm thrilled that Vanessa asked me to be here today and can not wait to show you guys how to make this faux antique glass window (it's much easier than you think).

What you need:
Thrifted Frame
Clear Silicone Caulk (I used windows and bath) either in a squeeze tube or with a caulk gun
Acrylic paint or color printed image
Spray paint (optional)
Joker playing card (or something to spread your caulk evenly with)
Desired image printed in reverse (if using paint technique)

First take your frame apart. I found an ugly goose picture at a local thrift store for $4. It doesn't matter what the back looks like or how it's attached as long as you can remove it. You won't be using it in the end so recycle it for something else. I chose to spray my wood frame a mat black.

Acrylic Paint Method-
Remove your glass and clean it well. If you need an image to trace, I used my logo for mine and there was no way I was going to get the letters without a guide, so I printed it out to fit my frame. You need to print your image in reverse as you will be painting it on the inside of your glass so it needs to be backward to start. If your frame is large like mine you may need to print your image on a few sheets and tile it together (paint works great for this as photoshop will not tile! Create your image then open in paint and print).

Lay your image down and place your glass on top of it. Use your acrylic paint to paint your image on the inside of the glass. Let your paint dry for several hours, or over night, just to make sure it doesn't smudge when you apply your silicone.

Now for the fun part. Silicone is stinky so make sure you work is a ventilated area. I used the $3 tube of great value stuff from walmart, any brand will work as long as it's clear. Set your glass so that the longest side is horizontal. You will work your way vertically with several glob and drag rows. Pile up a big glob of silicone, grab your playing card (or what ever you have to spread the stuff) and drag it down to the bottom like your squeegeeing a silk screen. You want the little bubbles and lines that it leaves behind so don't worry about that, but make sure you don't put it on to thick or it will dry cloudy. You can go over it as much as you like until it's a thin bubbly layer about 1/8 inch thick.

You can add a slight wavy motion to your drag if you like the wavy glass shown in the blimp example.
It will be dry and ready to hang within an hour. If your frame had tabs to hold the back in you just need to insert the glass, bend the tabs back and hang. My back was pinned in so I shot a couple staples into the frame so that they stuck out a bit which held my glass in just fine. Voila! Looks like old antique wavy glass! It looks even cooler if you hold it up to the light so if you have a big window this would look great hanging in it, just add a chain to hang it from!

Image Transfer method-
Clean your glass and apply the silicone in a thin layer as described above. Print your image out on a laser printer, it may also work with ink jet I just haven't tried it. Trim around your image as close to the edge as you can. Lay down your silicone on the glass and immediately place your picture, image side down, on to the wet silicone lightly pushing it in so your ink will stick when you take the paper away. Let the Silicone dry. Once it dries soak the back of the image paper and with your fingers, a toothbrush or a damp cloth rub the paper away until it's all gone. You can rub a little extra in areas you want to distress your image. The image will be transparent when our done and remember that white areas disappear when the paper is gone so images with a lot of white are not a good choice.

I hope you were inspired today! Thank you for having me, don't be a stranger! -Taylor

wow taylor! i can honestly say i would never have thought that up in a million years! thanks for continually bending the rules! make sure you guys check out her blog and see what she comes up with next!

tutorial: appliqueing with used dryer sheets

i'm not a big time holiday or season decorator. what i have up is what i have up all year round, usually. except for a little something here and there.
well here's a tutorial to add a little something springish to your home.
oh and i'm going to show you how you can use old dryer sheets to make it happen.

what you will need.
scraps of fabric (i used one of my opened charm packs of kate spain's Verna line for moda. love that line!)
a metal hoop. or a wood one will be just fine as well.
dryer sheet that's been used already in your dryer.
so your dryer sheet right as it comes out of the dryer is probably really wrinkled.
take your iron to it. but make sure you get a dish towel in between your dryer sheet and your iron. i'm not sure if it would melt it if you did it straight on, but i didn't want to learn that lesson.

next you are going to want to draw your egg on a piece of paper.
i didn't do a pdf on this thinking that an egg is kind of easy to draw. but if enough of you complain that you need a pdf drawing of the egg i'll load it up and make a link. if not then lets move on.

with a sharpie i traced my drawn egg onto my ironed dryer sheet.
originally i was going to do a small egg and a big one, but i changed my mind so please ignore the big egg in these two pictures. pretend it's not there. like the man behind the curtain.

next you are going to take your dryer sheet and place it on top of your fabric (right side facing UP.)
sew on your drawn on line.
cut out your egg and then slit a small area of the dryer sheet. preferably in the middle of your egg.
and use the slit to turn it inside out.
and this is what you should end up with.
next you are going to press your egg with an iron.
i made three eggs this same way.
next you are going to applique on your eggs.
but first you want to get some muslin into your hoop. ( i doubled mine over so it would be thicker)
to applique, you will start with the middle egg.
come up from the back as close as you can to the edge of the egg. and then come up through the very side of the egg.
next you are going to go down directly underneath of where you came up through your egg.
and you are going to do so around your whole egg.
make sure you sew right at the edge of your fold, this will make your stitches invisible.
once you've appliqued all three eggs on there. cut off the excess muslin. (i tried it cutting the muslin before i appliqued and the muslin got loose in the hoop and made it harder to re- tighten it afterward)
uh that last egg looks like it had a few issues. mainly for the fact that i had a squiggly 3 year old on my lap wanting to help. well, it adds character. and my daughter got to help.

and now it rests in my hallway shelf. except that after taking this picture i think i'll move it to the other side so there's a little more color on that side.

i need to get out more.
and speaking of "its almost spring, even though it's still snowing outside where i live"...
i made katie a new dress. for spring.
it's sleeveless.
so she will have to wear a sweater till the snow finally decides to give us a break. so like june or something like that.

hmmm okay well HAPPY MONDAY.
come wednesday we will have another guest tutorial blogger. EXCITING!
we'll talk soon!

dear husband of mine

dear husband,
as you already know we are fast approaching our 12 year anniversary.
and as you already know because you have been married to me for so said years...you know that i'm kind of hard to shop for on these occasions.
so here's my list of things you could get me and i would be totally happy with:
1.) a new house that looks like this. or you could just remodel our 1970's bungalow to look like this house as well. i'm not too picky...either one will be fine.
or you could:
2.) buy me that nice suv i've had my eye on.
no more would be the days of watching the odometer reach unsightly #'s past the 150,000 mark.
and days of me parking around the corner from our house so no one will see me coming out of our trash mobile.
and we could kiss goodbye the days of asking family and friends prior to entering our mini van if they in fact have made sure their immunizations are all up to date, and to sign a release form anyways, "just in case"
or if those two things fall through you could always
3.) buy me

Friends - The Complete Series Collection and i know it's $154.99...but...look at what a savings it would be not buying a new house or car! i mean whats $155 when we were just talking millions and thousands?

or there's always this:
4.) for a whopping bargain of $75 you could get me 30 Rock: Seasons 1-3

so you pick...whatever you get me from this list would be awesome and i will truly love it!

love you tons,
that wonderful thing you married almost 12 years ago.

did you all see how i did that? yeah i'm a genius.

guest tutorial blogger: Disney of ruffles and stuff

i'm excited to introduce this weeks guest blogger Disney of the ever popular blog Ruffles and Stuff. it all started when she left me a comment a couple of months ago and i instantly thought "wait either this person really likes disneyland stuff or could she really be named disney?" so then i clicked over to her profile and WOW, was i happy i did! talk about ruffle-ly and feminine goodness!!! the girl can take most anything and tweak it just enough to make it just right, or even better. so without further ado, let me give the time over to the woman herself:
Hello everyone!!
I'm Disney, from Ruffles and Stuff!
Thank you so much for welcoming me here today! I have to admit that I feel incredibly honored to be guest posting for Vanessa. I don't have to tell you how completely and intimidatingly amazing she is. I put her on such a crafty pedestal!
I'm so excited to share a little bit of my creative world with you today!
This project is a little something I stole from our dear friends over at Potter Barn. I love their "Natural Easter Basket", but even if I could afford it, it's no longer available! So, I made my own for about $4!
First step: Grab a basket. If you're like me, you've got tons of these lying around (I have a basket problem....), but if you don't, check your local thrift store and you'll find tons! After you've found the perfect one, give it a coat of green spray paint, inside and out:
  • Then you'll need spanish moss, and some "berry bushes". I got both at the Dollar Tree!
  • Grab your glue gun, and attach a light layer of spanish moss to your basket, including the handle. (Glue well!)
  • Once your basket is covered, spray a light coat of the same green paint over all the moss. I love it if a little of the natural moss color shows here and there, it's so natural looking!
  • Take your berry bushes (I used 1 green bush, and 1 white), and cut them into small sections with craft scissors.
  • Then glue them to your basket with your glue gun, about 1.5-2 inches apart, alternating the green and white. Don't forget the handle!
  • Fill in the gaps with single berries from your bushes. (It will go faster than you think!)
And you're all done!
And you know, I think I ended up liking the version I made even better than the PB one :o)
It's grown-up enough for big-people....
And still cute enough for the little ones!
This was scandalously quick and easy, and it feels good to have a handmade Easter Basket for my little punkin this year! Sure beats the neon-pink, plastic ones ;o)
Thanks so much for having me Vanessa!
And thank you all for hanging out with me today!
Take care!!
-Disney :o)

HA! you all know how i feel about pottery barn! so this project was perfect! thank you so much disney for taking the time and talent and bringing it over here for the day! make sure to go check out disney and all her fabulous ideas!
