this one right here is my favorite, it could also be that i like the fact that it has three shades of the same color. whatever the case its my favorite. :) she knows that and i'm just waiting for it to show up at my house. she knows my address so i'm not quite sure what the hold up is. >:)
another fun one that i love in this book which i am willing to have as well, is this cute bella solid
and last but not least that i want in my house...is this gorgeous lots of white with beautiful stars.
so there you have it the three quilts i'm waiting to show up at my house.
sooooo:
julie has asked me 3 questions to answer:
All of the quilts in Skip the Borders are... borderless! Do you skip borders on most of your quilts?
actually, i only have like 3 quilts that i've made that do not have borders. for some reason i usually add borders. BUT i'm actually falling in love with the idea of no borders!
In the intro to my book I give you Permission to Break the Rules. Do you break some quilting rules? What is the number one rule you break and why?
ha! um...i think i always break rules because i kind of experiment to learn so i do things my way, before i ask any questions. so i guess that's breaking rules. sometimes i like my way of doing things, but when i finally get around to learning how others have done things, i like that too.
It's no secret that I love binding! In Skip the Borders I included an entire chapter on binding. So the million dollar question, is do you use bias or straight of grain most of the time? STRAIGHT!!!! because i feel like i can get more bang for my buck.
okay so now we have the same questions for you:
1. Do you skip borders on most of your quilts?
2. Do you break some quilting rules?
3. Do you use bias or straight of grain most of the time?
you can answer one or three:
it gives you one or three chances!
up to you!
if you chose to do more than one chance please answer each question in a separate comment with you contact email at the bottom of each comment.
you have till thursday at noon to enter.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 400 of 486 Newer› Newest»I love the borderless look but I've never done it that way! Hollyholl1@AOl.com
I am a rule follower mainly because when I do not follow rules I end up with a disaster.
I prefer bias!
straight grain usually. Hollyholl1@AOL.com
I almost always use borders unless I'm making an accessory out of the quilting.
I just made my first quilt top, and I like the idea of skipping the border - I think it puts even more focus on the piecing, instead of the sashing and borders. Thanks for the chance to win!
ellen(at)myerly(dot)net
I feel too new to quilting (only 1 year) to skip any rules yet. If anything, I'm finding there's even more than I had thought originally :-). When I just sewed clothing years ago, it seemed the only rule was a 5/8" seam allowance. Is that still around?
Since I am new to quilting I'm sure I break many rules (since I don't really know what the rules are!). Thanks for a chance at this great book!
ellen(at)myerly(dot)net
I usually use straight of grain bias for my binding. When sewing garments I use the bias.
Have only bound a small practice piece of quilting so far, but I definitely think straight binding is the way to go - much easier! Thanks for the chance at this great book!
ellen(at)myerly(dot)net
I don't think I have ever skipped the borders on anything other than baby quilts.
I probably break a lot of rules because I sort of taught myself so didn't know there were rules.
I sometimes skip boarders and usually use bias binding.
I have never tried bias binding so I have only done straight. Not sure I would like doing bias binding.
I haven't skipped borders yet, buti want to now.
I'm not really sure if I break any rules or not. :-)
I tend to use straight of grain, except when I want my striped binding on the bias. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of this book.
I almost always add borders. christina112358 at gmail dot com
I've never learned most of the rules, so I have no idea if I break them! christina112358 at gmail dot com
Straight binding all the way! christina112358 at gmail dot com
I skip borders on most of my quilts.
I break some quilting rules on most every quilt. Aren't rules meant to be broken?
I use straight of grain binding although I'm intrigued with stripes on the bias.
1. Do you skip borders on most of your quilts?
the 2 I've made so far - borderless! the 3rd one will have borders though
2. Do you break some quilting rules?
since I have only made 2 quilts so far, I have to say I am following the rules I guess...
3. Do you use bias or straight of grain most of the time?
my 1 of 2 quilts I've made had straight of grain binding
straight and i brake a lot of rules
I love borders on my quilts. If they aren't on some patterns, I add them on. I just like it better.
I usually try and follow the rules while quilting. I'm trying to learn all I can. I only break a rule if I fully understand it and I just want to try something different.
Straight binding. It's way easier. The one time I tried bias, I totally screwed it up.
I skip borders most of the time save them for a special quilt for certain gifts.By teaching myself to quilt etc. while my husband was sick I found for my sanity and his humor it was easier to break rules and wing some things.Thank-you for the give away and your site
The two quilts I've done so far are both sans borders, though the 2 I'm working on both have borders so a bit of both.
Rules? I'm self taught so don't know most of the rules. I do stick to 1/4" seams though
I usually use straight grain simply because it's better use of the fabric, I use bias for garment sewing as I'm normally dealing with curves and the stretch is useful there.
#3 I use straight grain binding for straight lines (i.e. quilts). Tee hee. Thanks for the giveaway!

I often do not follow all of the rules :-)
Sometimes I skip borders ... it depends on the quilt ...
I think rules are made to be broken! But you should know what the logic is before you break it ... lots of times rules come from old myths but sometimes there are reasons for them ...
I use straight-grain binding most of the time. It saves some time and fabric ... but I use bias if any curves are involved ...
I don't usually skip the borders. I Need to come outside of my box!
I tend to stick to the rules!
It's about even borders and no borders.
cpup40@aol.com
I almost always break some of the rules. The only rule that I stick to is the 1/4" seam allowance.
cpup40@aol.com
Straight of grain. It saves money and time.
cpup40@aol.com
i've made two without borders, but they were both quag. however, i have twon in my kitted stash that have no borders. will get around to working on them again sometime.
i've made two without borders, but they were both quag. however, i have twon in my kitted stash that have no borders. will get around to working on them again sometime.
mostly, i follow a pattern; if i change anything i change the size or color.
i use straight of grain unless there are curves.
A for borders....it depends.sometimes, I skip them, sometimes I use them. It all depends on the feel of the quilt. I do think borders tend to produce a more "traditional" looking quilt.
I break the rules all the time. I'm kinda of a quilt by the seat of my pants gals.
I try to go for the grain. Triangles can be tricky though.
Mostly I use borders on my quilts, but I'm getting away from it. Usually I only add them to get a bigger quilt!
Oh I think I am always breaking the rules of quilting: color combos, piecing, seam allowances, etc. I can almost always make it fit!
And can I say that word verification is a trying experience for me . . .
1. Do you skip borders on most of your quilts? Yes. I mean, I don't use a traditional layout. I usually "float" my blocks on a solid background. No border there.
Almost always a straight of grain girl for binding.
Once again having trouble proving I'm a human!
And hoping the third time is the charm. . .
2. Do you break some quilting rules?
I don't follow any quilting rules. Well I do know the proper way to do things, and I use the right technique etc but I don't feel limited in any way with those "rules". I use them when necessary and break them when I feel like it. :)
I do not skip boarders but I am think I will on some of my next quilts.
I do not break rules of quilting. I do not have enough experience yet.
I use straight of grain.
I occasionally skip borders but seeing the inspirational quilts in this book I would be inclined to do it more often.
I break quilting rules all the time. Doesn't everyone?! My biggest rule break would be the press, don't iron and no steam rule I was taught when I first started learning quilting. I do not have the self control for that!
I think I am a straight grain girl. I have never tried a bias binding and am really curious to know what the difference is and why it is supposed to be better.
Sí, a menudo no utilizo fronteras y me gustaría saber cómo lo hace Julie.
Sí, me gusta romper las reglas y probar cosas. Aveces salen mal.
La mayor parte del tiempo no utilizo sesgo.
Sometimes I skip the borders, but mostly I include them.
debi1953@sbcglobal.net
I'm pretty much a "follow the pattern" girl & don't break the rules.
debi1953@sbcglobal.net
I always use straight of the grain binding.
debi1953@sbcglobal.net
I usually have borders but I'm just finishing a Camille Roskelley pattern that has no borders.
I try to avoid bias at all costs
I skip borders whenever possible because I don't really like doing borders. Usually I do it to make the quilt bigger, or just a narrow frame.
I love bias binding but only use it on curved edges or if its a stripe I like, but most of the time I use straight grain since it takes less fabric.
Most of my quilts don't have borders. Some of them do. Depends on the overall look I'm going for. soparkaveataoldotcom
I am pretty sure I break a lot of rules, since I'm not entirely sure what they all are. One rule I have heard of is to wash fabric first. I used to do that now I never do. I also press some seams open when it lays better. Didn't used to do that. I guess I am a rebel. Love all these quilts that is for sure.
Rules? Whose rules would that be? Unless I were to be making something for a competition that had rules, I prefer my freedom and my quilts do too. soparkaveataoldotcom
Most of my bindings are straight of grain. I use bias when binding curves. soparkaveataoldotcom
I love the pics on this post ! So borderless shall be top on my list.
I love breaking the rules . Its in my nature , but only for the DIY things I make not otherwise ;).. So if it come to quilting why not !!
Wnat to start of quilting , so I am on a look out for a grest book, not necessarily for beginners as I have read a lot on quilting. So strsight or bias is not something I can answer now LOL..
I have just begun quilting and haven't skipped a border yet!!!!
clfiedler5@gmail.com
I have never cut on the bias!
clfiedler5@gmail.com
Not sure what all the rules are yet si I'm sure I break them a lot!
clfiedler5@gmail.com
I just finished my 2nd 'real' quilt last night about midnight and so far I've done straight grain on both of those. I say 'real' quilt because all those before were just squares with machine embroidery on them and all were no larger than baby quilts and those never really had any bindings at all.
Because I'm still so new to quilting I have been following the rules so far. One that I have broken a few times is the lack of pinning things.
vburr at charter dot net
I don't skip borders . . . yet
Can't think of any quilting rules I "break"
Straight of grain. Thanks for the great giveaway!
Just recently started trying the no borders look--love the clean lines and modern feel
I skip the borders on some quilts, just depends on the design.
Amanda
The quilting "rule" I break whenever possible (depends on the size of the quilt)is basting...YUK!
I almost always do straight binding too, the bias seems to waste too much fabric!
Amanda
I doubt very seriously if I follow all of the rules, in fact I'm not even sure what the rules are, so that's probably not a good sign :)
Amanda
I very rarely skip the borders, but just recently I did and I love how it turned out
I do knowingly break any quilting rules
lilacbarries@gmail.com
I usually do strait of grain binding just because I hate binding and do whatever is quickest for me to get it done!
lilacbarries@gmail.com
I don't often skip the borders ~ make them sometimes just to make the quilt a little bit bigger.
Thanks for the giveaway!
I didn't know there where rules till I got into a quilting group. I guess I broke a lot of rules ~ teehee!
Straight grain for me ~ though I would be willing to do bias ~ just seems like a pain.
I would say my borders are about 50/50. I think it just depends on the quilt.
The quilting rule I break the most is not pre-washing my fabric. When I want to get started I want to start, not wash fabric. It is like laundry and I don't like doing that either!
I use straight grain bias all the time.
I am mostly a rule follower but if I see a different way of doing something that would be easier or more to my liking I have no problem changing
I use straight of grain mostly
I just finished my very first quilt and it had boarders plus I have some some tops waiting to quilt that have boarders. BUT I would not even think twice about no boarders because I am a beginner and not yet set in my ways. Which is good!
Borders are usually dependant on the size of the quilt I am going for! Sometimes yes, sometimes no! Sometimes tweaked!
I seem to always add borders to my quilts but after seeing these I might have to get the book and change my tune!
I skip borders unless the quilt *really* needs them. Once I made a quilt that needed 5 mitered borders. That was intense, but totally worth it.
I break a rule when I don't square up my blocks.
Bias binding! I was scared of it for years but finally learned and it looks so much better.
Borders depend on the quilt...but I think a majority of mine do not have borders.
I'm a self-taught quilter, so I think I probably break many rules without knowing. Recently I should be "pressing" seams instead of ironing. Eh.
i'm about 50/50 on no borders with the quilts I've made so far. it depends on the quilt, but i love the look of no borders!
bumblybzs at gmail.com
I've only used bias binding once, when I wanted the fabric I chose to be rotated 45 degrees. Otherwise, I think it's much easier to make it straight.
i use straight binding almost exclusively. it's easy to prep and get onto the quilt than bias.
bumblybzs at gmail dot ocm
I skip borders on some quilts, depends on the quilt - if modern or tranditional. I use straight grain for binding, much easier to cut

Lisa H. from Minnesota
i'm not sure that i break many rules while quilting. i just have fun!
bumblybzs at gmail dot ocm
Rules? There's rules? Aren't rules made to be broken? I break rules because I don't know who makes these rules up.
Depends on the quilt. Some quilts scream for borders, other say no need.
Straight of grain for me.
Answer #1 Do I skip borders...
It depends on the quilt. I have been leaving off borders more and more lately, but that is because I like the feel of modern quilts without borders and that is what I have been doing...
Answer #2
What are rules - I have never been known to follow rules!
Answer #3
Bias v Straight grain... It depends on the quilt, and the binding. I don't have a preference
1. Do you skip borders on most of your quilts? Nope, I've always put several on there - but I do like the look of them without borders. May have to start giving it a try.
erinmhray at gmail dot com
2. Do you break some quilting rules? Yes....I don't like to wash fabric before quilting. I've only done it once, when working with reds and whites.
erinmhray at gmail dot com
3. Do you use bias or straight of grain most of the time? Straight, because it is so much easier to cut.
erinmhray at gmail dot com
I'm probably 50-50 border/no border. Depends on the quilt design.
I ALWAYS break the rules (same reason as you).
And I thought I was the only one who found bias wasteful. :) (Unless I'm buying the prepackaged stuff.)
I haven't skipped the borders yet - I need this book to learn how!
gussek at hotmail dot com
I'm just a beginner so I haven't broken any rules yet.
gussek at hotmail dot com
I use straight grain most of the time.
gussek at hotmail dot com
I do skip borders sometimes. Sometimes I add them if I need more width to the quilt.
I think the biggest rule I break is not planing enough. I like to get going and worry about the fine details later. Also I like to open up my seams.
I think the biggest rule I break is not planing enough. I like to get going and worry about the fine details later. Also I like to open up my seams.
Probably straight grain however it depends if it's scraps I'll do what fits
I do skip on border sometimes. Depending on what look I'm going for.
I always do straight grain bindings.
It's fun to break rules, no :)
I almost always make borders for my quilts. But Julie's book has shown that the quilt can look great without the borders. I'd love to give it a try.
I love the look of borderless quilts - so I do go borderless a lot of the time. But sometimes a little extra length or width is needed and the blocks used won't let that happen, so I do add borders.
I have skipped borders depending on the quilt.
I always break quilting rules because I'm self taught and like to keep things simple.
True to my answer to #2 (I always break the rules) I always use straight of grain because I don't like to have too many seams. The only exception is if the fabric design looks better when cut on the bias for binding.
Break quilting rules? If I don't know what the rules are I can't break them can I? If I am using a pattern, I read the pattern and then I do it my way.
I prefer using bias. I like the way it lays and I think it wears a little bit better.
I mostly add borders, but would like to know more about not using them!
I usually use borders but love the quilts in this book so am looking foward to a no borders quilt!
Well, I really dont know what the rules are! I watch alot of tutorials and everyone does it different. I try what will work for me.
I use straight, by the time I get to the binding I want fast and easier, plus I dont like wasting fabric.
Everyone follows some rules and breaks others; always prewash fabric/never prewash, press seams to one side/press seams open, only hand piecing or quilting/only piecing and quilting by machine. Everyone has to decide for themselves which rules/guidelines they are going to follow!
kcneiman (at) gmail (dot) com
Straight grain, so far.
Thanks for the chance to win!
The judge at our last quilt show showed us that by using bias binding, you eliminate the puckering you sometimes get after attachment.
I'm getting much more comfortable with breaking the rules. Must have something with being left-handed!!
Definitely straight grain.
I don't usually skip borders but I have been playing with the idea a lot more lately.
Eliminating borders sounds like a great idea. I have two quilts in the works which will NOT have borders.
I have put borders on all my quilts. I might have to try one without borders. They look like fun.
I break the rules!!!
I have done both bias and straight grain. I have been told it is better to do bias.
I am new to quilting so most all my stuff has borders on it! Although after looking at these fabulous quilts without borders it really makes me think I want to try a borderless quilt!
I guess I probably do break the quilting rules sometimes because I don't really know all the rules! But who cares, right?
So far I have always made straight of grain binding. Now, I have bought some Bias binding before to use for small projects such as potholders.
No, I've never skipped borders, but I am ready to try it! I really like the clean look that a borderless quilt can have.
Deb
dr392809@gmail.com
One quilt rule I've been known to break is not re-sewing a block that ends up with one or two triangle points chopped off.
Deb
dr392809@gmail.com
I use straight of grain almost all the time. Bias binding is the exception.
Deb
dr392809@gmail.com
I don't usually skip the border, but that's mainly because it gives me some nice straight pieces to experiment with (quilting, embroidery, applique). I do really like the look of the borderless quilts though.
I'm not sure what the rules are, so I'm sure I've broken several.
I prefer straight binding because it's so much easier to cut. I have issues with anything that requires an angle.
I've ALWAYS put borders on my quilts....but I've been seeing this book in alot of blogs.....I'll have to try my next quilt without a border!
Connie in California
I usually put borders on my quilts but I'm going to start experimenting now.
wlinda_ca@yahoo.com
I used to follow all the rules when I first started quilting but now I make the rules and do anything I want.
wlinda_ca@yahoo.com
It depends on whether I miter the corners of my borders. If I do, I use a bias binding.
wlinda_ca@yahoo.com
I skip most of the borders on my quilts! :)
The only rule I alwaysfollow is the 1/4" seam. :)
I use straight grain for the binding! :)
(sorry I forgot my email on the other comments... )
bcgeates at netbistro dot com
I broke all the rules when I first started quilting. Now I follow the ones I that I find a good reason for. I think that should be the main purpose of rules - to keep you out of trouble
I,ve never used bias binding. Maybe some day I'll find a need for it!
I usually feel I "have to " put a border but maybe that lovely book might give me different ideas... Thanks for the giveaway... Celine_Combet at yahoo dot co dot uk
Rules, what rules? I guess I am usually disciplined unless something comes up... Celine_Combet at yahoo dot co dot uk
I always cut my binding on straight grain, fabric is expensive where I live so I go for minimum waste...
Celine_Combet at yahoo dot co dot uk
I've only made a few baby quilts but I did borders on all of them....I love the look of these borderless quilts though....
amandaj(at)cinci(dot)rr(dot)com
Do I break the quilting rules......probably ;-)
amandaj(at)cinci(dot)rr(dot)com
I always use straight of grain!
amandaj(at)cinci(dot)rr(dot)com
2. Do you break some quilting rules?
I'm a brand new quilter, so yes i'm breaking all the rules. I have been sewing for 42 years so use a lot of those old techniques by habit. I'm willing to learn and the idea of doing a border-less binding sounds like a lot of saved time to me. thanks for all you do.
I often finish off quilts without a border - just finished two baby quilts last week that were borderless. (One used a Simply Color charm pack!!)
Since I am a self taught quilter I will often follow the rules the first time I do something new, but may do my own thing the next time around.
I use straight cut binding. I haven't taken the time to learn how to do the bias cut. So chalk that up to being lazy and comfortable.
I skip the borders about 50% of the time. It depends on the quilt design and the size that I want.
Rules, shmules ... I'm a free spirit.
I cut my binding from WOF except when using stripes or dealing with curves.
I do borders on some quilts, but I don't like cutting borders. So, if I can get away with it, I will go borderless. :-)
Heather
I've probably been breaking the rules for a long time because I'm a self taught quilter and didn't really know what the rules were!
Heather
Hmmm, there are more people like me out there who don't follow the rules? I never press, I never pin, but I do usually put on borders because I think they "frame" the quilt...now I'm going to have to rethink this!!
No particular preference -- I cut my binding however the fabric will look best. :-)
Heather
I'm just beginning to skip borders. I always thought a quilt had to have a border and sometimes I would add borders to enlarge a quilt that I liked and didn't have borders. LOL but I'm really liking a lot of the new designs "without" borders.
Break quilting rules!!! Ha! Ha! I thought rules were made to be broken!!!
I do use bias. Reason one is that I was taught in Junior High that bias will wear better and if I hope for my quilt to someday become an heirloom, I'd like it to be fully intact with the binding.
Reason two, I love using stripes or plaids for my bindings, when possible, and I think they look great on on bias.
