V and Co: adventures in paper piecing

so what do you do when you feel like you have SO much on your plate, that you don't even know where to begin?
well, if you are me, you put aside some of the super pressing deadlines you've put upon yourself (along with things you said you would do so they are actually other people's deadlines as well) and you totally dive in and learn a new trade, and fall hard, fast in passion with it.
yup, talking about paper piecing.
holy crap! where have you been all my sewing career? um right under my freaking nose apparently and i just didn't know how awesome it was.

when faith was here i asked her to take a minute of her time to just show me a little bit of how to do her magic trickery of absolute coolness that is called paper piecing. yeah yeah, so a lot of you already know how to do it, or have been doing it for decades yadda yadda yadda. but this was my first time EVER giving it a try, and let me tell you. it's opened up a WHOLE NEW WORLD people. i almost feel like i just want to try and try and try different things. it's kind of cool. and it makes certain designs actually easy to do.

SO, here's faith's instructions on how to paper piece, i had to look at it like a hundred times before my brain finally did a click (because even though she showed me in person...for some reason my brain is mush from too many other things and it took me a couple times looking and trying to finally get it. again. :)
i drew up my super simple design and added the 1/4" seam she tells you to, and then i picked out my colors. (yes, COLOR! I LOOOOOOOOVE COLOR right now! monochromatic, ombre, shades that look awesome together you name it i'm playing with it! whole other post coming up on that.)

and then i started. i cut out my fabric a little bigger i normally would need to because it's all still kind of new to me, and i'm still wetting my feet.
and then i messed up because i forgot i was suppose to do it "backwards" but looking at faith's instructions really helped me train my brain...and then well WATCH OUT I GOT ALL AWESOME!
and ended up making a silly looking thing like this...ooooh but wait it's just because i hadn't trimmed my edges!
turn it around trim it up, aaaaaaannnnnnd.....
BAM! yeah that's what i'm talking about. that right there made my day.
do you even know how long i've had something close to that little block drawn up in my little book of drawings? like years. never knew how i would accomplish it...and there i did it in like 5 minutes.

i had a little bit of extra time (hahahaha! hmmm) and made it into a little pincushion. yup. so cute. then i went and picked up girl noisemaker from school and got other noisemakers doing homework, and ready for soccer...when little miss girl noisemaker finds said adorable pincushion and SQUEELS:
"CAN I HAVE IT?!"
"sure what you gonna do with it?"
this is what she did:
yup, one of my hand warmers, and now my pin cushion are making for a really cute set up for her barbie's furniture...perhaps a very small quilt is in order next?
hmmmmmmm...
hey faith: you think i could make really small blocks of your summer sampler
:D

I'm so glad your young daughter appreciates all the work you do, even the mistakes :)Personally, I'm not crazy about paper piecing because I love measuring and using my rotary cutter. You confirmed my distaste for paper piecing!!! Thank you, I don;t have to keep feeling guilty. ha ha!

ah! well cynthia, this is why i love the paper piecing, it's very forgiving of the exact measurement, and you can make almost anything if you can get the design to work! :) and yes, katie, loves almost anything i do, she kind of fights me on things i tell her she can't have yet and then it always end up in her room somewhere...hidden if she's not suppose to have it. turkey! :)

Totally addictive. I have only begun to play with paper-piecing in the last few months and the precision leads me to gleefulness. There are some really intricate and intense designs out there, too, for when you get a huge desire to make yourself crazy. :-)

And I haven't touched a Barbie in years, have no daughters, nieces or a Barbie-inclined nephew, but holy man, I am in love with that furniture and would get a dollhouse if I could decorate it that chic! You should definitely make a tiny quilt for Babs.

So happy you enjoyed the process. It took me forever to get it to click, but I really love paper piecing now.

Paper piecing lets me sew for fun! I have a pattern for a bookmark, that I've made for family and friends for a great little tuck-into-anything gift! It's a minature flying geese pattern. So happy to hear you are finding FUN in paper piecing!

On the Barbie note---- I sewed a 12outfit Barbie wardrobe collection for my cousin Amiee, for her 8th b-day! And then again for my daugher, Sarah Jane too, she and I had fun picking out the fabrics! One of Sarah's first sewing projects was making a hand stitched pillow for her Barbie house!!!! Daughters are great, you get to relive your childhood, PLUS make great memories for her!!

Vanessa it looks awesome!!!! I love your little pattern too. Yes, make some super tiny Summer Sampler Series blocks. :) Did you see my Solstice Stars Series paper piecing templates too? More fun for you! :-P

I too am just discovering paper piecing!!! I think it is so pretty and fun!! I love that your daughter loved it-way to go!!

Your daughter sounds just like mine. I should have a sound button in my sewing room to press automatically whenever I finish making something that says, "Ooooh, that's pretty! Can I have it? (Or can you make me one too?)" Nice to feel appreciated. ;)

Yes, paper-piecing is the bomb. I've done almost all my Farmer's Wife blocks that way ... can you say (almost) fool-proof accuracy?! LOL!

I love your palette for this! I'm not a huge fan of paper piecing since it seems to take me so much longer. It has to be something I really want to make to put the extra effort in!

If you will make a barbie sized houndstooth quilt I will build a shrine in your honour. ;) My 4 yr old is a klepto for my handmade stuff too! She stole my couch pillows and stuck them on her bed, even after I said no. Then she told me that the baby quilt I was making wasn't pretty, but nearly bawled when I told her it wasn't for her anyways, it was for her little sister. Funny duckling. And now I feel bad I haven't made her something recently, even though I just got paint all over my glasses repainting her ceiling today... Gotta hurry up and finish her room so I can finish the dress I was making her. :) She'll be flying high for weeks!
