this is a story about just that...but with a baaaaad ending.

we found a cute little field mouse outside and caught it in a mason jar...
brought it in the house,
the kids all loved it.
yes, yet another stupid move by the big city people living in the country.
jake felt bad that it didn't have anything to drink, so he opened the mason jar and went to give it some water... the thing shot out of there like it was bitten by a radioactive spider.
i mean i've NEVER seen anything move THAT fast, and jump THAT high and PRECISE.
seriously.
and i would of never of guessed that i would of reacted like all the cartoons depict women who come head to head with a mouse do.
i.so.did.

we've tore up the house and have cleaned under every big appliance.
currently the mouse is winning 1 christenson's 0
...it's still in our house.
and it's not so cute OR little any more.

I'm a Vegas city girl, married to a Washington farm boy. We have had three run-ins with mice since moving to a house that backs up to a large undeveloped desert mesa. Three small grey mice living in my garage, and one HUGE field mouse (there might be more) living in our cinderblock wall. I too thought they were cute, until while putting my kids in car seats looked down and saw one next to my foot! I screamed and jumped (which my three boys still haven't let me live down.) Hope you catch your little country visitor soon - you're much braver than I, we've contemplated moving to the country but this city girl isn't sure she can hack it yet!

one of those "cute little critters" ate through the wires in my car...$226 plus one way towing ($65) later my car runs again. If another one, or if the same little guy does it again, $600+ in addition to what ever towing expenses I have then! UGHHH and I am in the middle of town!!

You can borrow my two cats to find the critter but they're lousy at being cats... they'd probably make friends with it and have a cuddle.

A couple of weeks ago we came across a mouse in out house - and I totally screamed and jumped on a chair. All I needed was a broom to whap around and a kerchief on my head. Talk about embarrassing! The new ortho traps that you can't see inside with a little peanutbutter did the trick here.
I hate mice. LOL
I used to work in a research lab doing experiments on them! The ones in the cages I was fine with but every now and then, some feral mouse would scamper near-by and I would about jump on a chair! The skeeve me out!
I hope you find yours soon. You probably won't but make sure all your food is in mouse-proof containers, including your pet food and perhaps he'll pass away before he does too much damage.
Next time, leave those little yucky mice outside. Bleh. :)

Victor makes some traps that you can bait easily, and not have to worry about your fingers "getting it' while setting it...and letting mousey go into the trash can, is easy too--just squeeze the other end of the trap together, and the mousey is in the can.
We live in rural Oklahoma. Lots of fields. LOTS of fields. We have 8 acres of fields right around the house. We have bait constantly out, in hidden places (where the children cannot get it), and traps at night when we *know* we have a mouse about, in areas where we've seen them before.
Many food items (grains, cereals, and such) will be fine in a freezer or fridge if you have space.
((HUGS)) and I'm sorry. Best bet is to NEVER bring them into the house...and kill them when you find them (don't re-release, just kill them).
look at it like this 1. it made a good story 2. you learned your lesson. 3. your house is sparkling clean 4. that's why they make D-Con. LOL!!!!!!

Funny mouse story. When I was really small, I heard my teenage sister screaming at the top of her lungs from the basement laundry room. When I rushed down to see what was going on, I found her standing on top of a chair, hysterically pointing at a brown furry thing on the floor. Recognizing it as my pet gerbil, I calmly went over and picked it up and held it out to her. She stumbled off the chair and nearly fainted!
This will be such a funny story for years to come...ONCE you get rid of him!!!

I live in a big city on the east coast and saw one of these little things run across the sidewalk when I was walking my dog in a very busy area... I think they're everywhere!
Traps...sticky traps, live traps, old fashioned snapping traps. FYI, there is NOTHING cute about a mouse so alls fair when catching them. I cannot even laugh at this story...I'm too freaked out!! My daughter brings a barn cat in when she sees a mouse. Works like a charm. House cats are too well fed to really get busy with a mouse. A barn cat will knowingly smile at you as thanks for providing dinner.

I know just how you feel. A couple weeks ago when I opened the pantry door a mouse ran out. I screamed. Then called my hubbie. I was sick with swine flu and to weak to do anything about the darn mouse. Luckily when he came home he set a trap and caught it within five minutes. Whewww!
Why do all the cartoons make mice seem cute? They definitely are not when they're eating up your food. I've heard peanut butter can lure them, but I'm not sure. Good luck - go team Christenson.

We had a cat and a mouse once, the cat caught the mouse and brought it *live* into our bed. My husband never slept soundly again until the cat died!

This is too funny!!
My latest mouse story was when my kids and I went to visit my husband when he was working in Canada. It was really late and everyone had gone to bed. I was laying on the couch watching TV and dozed off. I guess I opened my eyes a little and thought I saw my cat. Then I remembered that I wasn't home, and I started screaming. My husband and my kids thought I was imagining things until one night they stayed up late and saw the mouse, too. That is when they bought mouse traps.

I have had field mice in my home twice. Not a good thing. They can crawl up water pipes and get through very small holes. We had them in my stove, cupboards, walls and Oh yes they really can do a number on your car if they get under the hood. Hope you catch that little bugger fast.

TOO FUNNY! Ok, seriously, he will probably find his way out. Or you scared him to death and expect to see him in a couple of days scampering across some floor. Giggles. I'm a country gal and field mice are just part of cooler temps. I have 2 cats (one totally indoors and one indoor/outdoor). I STILL see one or two almost every year when the season changes. They don't eat much. LOL I have opened the laundry room door and screamed. My son (now 22) laughs at me cause they are SOOOO tiny and he raised hamsters. LOL Good luck on the 'hunt'.

*grin* I completely see it in my head. So funny.
I know they can jump and run really high and fast. When I was in college we had cats. And one day a friend came over who had a little pet mouse. She carried the little creature everywhere, including to our house. It never ran away, she said. But this time, when my cats saw the little creature move around her arm, they wanted to take a look. They were silly cats, had no idea that they could catch and eat it. They were just curious. But the mouse.. oh my. It knew exactly what the dangers were. And as soon as it saw a cat approaching, it made a noise as high and loud as I never could have expected, jumped over our heads and ran away. We had to catch the cats to make sure they didn't go after it, when they would realize they were cats and that was a mouse (;-)) and had to look everywhere in the house to find the mouse again. We did, in the end, and my friend was very happy. But she never brought the little creature to our house again. :-)

Sorry, that is really funny. We used to get an occasional mouse in our NYC apartment, and I hated it. They could dive through the most impossibly small spaces! It was unreal. My husband, being the animal lover that he is, always would release it outside when we caught one, and I know they always came running back inside. Once I chased a mouse through the lobby and out the front door. I do not miss mice. blah.
Baaahhaaaaa! Just go on and consider him a pet now! LOL! Sorry, this is very funny! Hope the weekend gets better V.

Get some food, put it in your bathtub at night, leave something beside the tub that the mouse can climb on. It will fall in the tub, but might not be able to get back out. That's how we caught an escaped hamster when I was a little girl.
Oh dear, now you will have a hard time not looking and listening for that mouse until you catch it! One time during Bible study, someone said to me, do you know you have a mouse crawling up your curtian, Bible study ended rather quickly! We didn't catch it that night, but my husband did while I was standing on a chair screaming and he had the broom and got it. So set a trap with peanut butter and good luck, hope you get it soon!

funny story--i am such a huge animal lover....when i worked at a grocery store many years ago, they used glue traps (which i think are AWFUL). i found a mouse one day stuck on one of them, and spent a good amount of time trying to pry his little feet off.....decided i couldn't without hurting him, so i painstakingly cut around all his little feet and then released him into a field on my way home from work that day. am i crazy? maybe. LOL
Okay, so I am kind of laughing, but also feeling for you. I HATE mice in the house. Hope you can get rid of it! Set peanut butter baited mouse traps along the walls behind appliances or furniture. Good luck!

I'm all for kindness to animals. But there are animals, and then there are pestilence and vermin. And one usually brings the other.
We had one in our home a couple of weeks ago. YES. They can jump high--a few feet, even. You'll need to kill it, honestly. Otherwise, it will find something to eat...especially this time of year, it is already looking for a nice warm place to live out the winter..catch it, kill it, and dispose of it (I like the brown paper sack, idea, btw, to whoever posted it. I'll have to remember that for the next time).

Well it certainly was a cute little mouse! I can see why it suckered you all into bringing it in from the chilly fall weather outside. : ) I'm a city gal too and haven't had any experiences with these little critters yet (I'm sure that since we now live in a farming community that it won't be long until the opportunity arises!) omgoodness!!! i busted out laughing! i'm sorry... i don't mean to laugh at your frustration, it was just such a great description i could totally envision the whole thing.

I did a similar thing unknowingly. I brought a mouse home in the bag we had taken to a harvest festival to pick corn that we kept putting down to pick. The kids and I came into the door put the bag down grabed a drink and my husband came in and said I don't want to alarm you but there is a mouse sitting half in and out of the bag. Before any of us could move the mouse was across the floor and under the fridge. Three days later using those traps that say you don't have to bait them, I convinced my husband to put some peanut butter on them. An hour later he was gone.
HOpefully he has already found his way out and back to his home. :) We have had them before too...not fun!
Well, just to let you know, I'm a country girl. I don't like mice, either. Even as a kid they made me squeal. But, I have found that my son's badminton racket works good, really good. Just sayin', if you don't have a cat around.
