Okay so I know you are asking "WHY would you cover up that lovely '70's lacquered, dark wood cabinet?" I know you're jealous it's not in your home, but I'm a little tired of looking at it. So I'm going to paint it. This is the color that is in question. Ralph Lauren calls it "KHAKI" I call it the new color of my cabinets and Jake calls it "Nasty Green" well maybe not "nasty" but we will not call it what he really calls it. Now I'm asking all you out there should I do it? Or should i go with distressed Beige? I'm planning on getting new counters (because they are also oh so lovely) and the plan is to get pewter drawer handles. So anyways thought I would throw it out there.

Are you planning on painting the walls around the cabinets? That might make a difference as to whether "nasty green" or distressed beige would be best.
Of course you could probably guess by looking around my house that I love the color...."shitbrindle green" has always been my favorite.
Oh, I forgot, can I have your countertops when you get rid of them? No, it's not to replace my 70's orange beauties...I was thinking I could stick them in my unfinished basement laundry room.

I like the green paint, it will hide the fingerprints and whatnot better than the beige and it will look great with pewter.
i think i'm planning on painting the walls a creamy yellow, the same color i have in my townhouse in provo, so i think that might work, was going to do a tan but with the green don't think it will make the green stand out, and yes felicia you can have my counters, they are gross though!
laura only reason why i get anything done is cause i am in the middle of nowhere and i have 3 hours two times a week where it's just me and katie, AND NOWHERE TO GO! so yeah you tend to get some things done. and by the way i dont have three little babies compaines all the time, that might eat up some of my time! YOU ARE THE AMAZING ONE!
Jen should i go with shiny or the "aged" one? i'm leaning with the "aged" one but dont know about the counter color then? charcol or beige brown?

I'd go with the aged look, it seems like it might go better with your other stuff and your style but...? Make sure that you use a paint that is for cupboards, my parents painted their cupboards a few years ago and used the wrong paint. Nightmare! I'll have my mom link here and tell you all about it.

First though it was delightful to read your blog and see your boys again (still adorable) and Katie..oh my, what a little doll! I love your new stitchery pattern and I still remember the tour I took of your home in Provo. You have wonderful taste in decorating.
I will start a new comment just on the cabinets.
Regarding your cabinets...My suggestion would be to go and pick out your counter tops before you pick out your paint. Even though you would paint before installing your counter tops you should pick out the thing you change the least often first. I have helped design some kitchens and there are very few counter tops that have green in them if you are thinking of granite. It would be a little easier in Corian or something like that, but even then green, is very hard to match and you would need to go with something very neutral.
Thinking about resale, neutral is always best. If you are staying in your home a long time it is still be easier to bring in your colors with the accessories, art work, etc. Your tastes will change with time and then you can get stuck with a color you get tired of as new trends in color become available. Painting cabinets is a hard job so you would probably want to only do it a few times.
So think of your flooring and counters then pick your paint. It is so much easier that way and you can get a look you really love instead of having to settle for whatever is available that matches your paint When you do paint use a high gloss for easier cleaning and try to seal it with something to protect the paint around your hardware from wearing off. Just as a side note on what color to pick first...do the same kind of thing in any rooms you decorate. As an example pick you bedding first, then the paint. I hope this helps!
YESS!! it helps! thanks for your input, just as a side note, my husband was tickled pink when he read your suggestions, it just justified that HE WAS RIGHT! so i think i'm going to go with distressed biege, and yes going to pick out our counters probably tomorrow, but not going to be able to do anything about them for a while seeing that jake leaves tomorrow! (SOB!!) but what i was thinking of doing ontop of the paint is sealing it with a antique stain. done a few pieces of furniture like that and i love the way it turns out. so yes thank you to all the suggestions, i still think that i'm going use that green on a hutch cause I LOVE THAT COLOR and i want to use it somewhere...now to find a hutch...hmmm
Perfect solution! My other daughter, Jen's sister. Laura, painted an old hutch red and it is just great. That color on a big accent piece is a fab idea!
